German airport drone attack: German investigators discovered a third drone and suspected explosives related to the failed German airport drone attack at Leipzig/Halle earlier this month. On Tuesday, August 25, German stations NDR and WDR, as well as the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, reported on the discovery.

The drone was discovered by investigators on August 14, approximately ten days after the event. They located it west of the airport, along with approximately 50 grams (1.8 ounces) of what they believe to be the military explosive hexogen.

The latest discovery adds another layer to the inquiry into the August 4 tragedy. Authorities discovered an explosives-laden drone near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane transporting military supplies.

Investigators are also looking into whether a second drone crashed with a DHL cargo jet. The probable crash occurred shortly after the airport was briefly closed following the incident.

The prosecutor general’s office did not immediately respond to a Reuters inquiry for comment. German authorities have not revealed who carried out the attempted attack.

Russia suspected in airport drone incident

Security officials mentioned in media reports believe Russian intelligence may have played a role in the attempted strike. Moscow has refuted the accusations.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to look into the drones and potential explosive items. They are also investigating the alleged interaction between the second drone and the DHL flight.

Leipzig/Halle airport is essential for cargo and military logistics. NATO and Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines utilize the airport to transport military supplies.

The August 4 event resulted in a temporary stoppage of airport operations. Investigators are now seeking to determine how the drones got to the location and what happened during the event.

The finding of the third drone and suspected explosives may give investigators with further information as they attempt to identify the events behind the failed attack. However, the authorities have yet to formally identify individuals involved.
