Maryam Nawaz Punjab Security Threats: CM Says Provincial Borders Pose Bigger Risk

Maryam Nawaz Punjab security threats have become a point of political debate after Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said her province faces a greater security risk from neighbouring provinces than from other countries.

Maryam stated at an event in Lahore that terrorism was entering Punjab through its provincial borders. Despite sharing an international border with India, she claims the province, which has a population of roughly 130 million people, confronts threats from all directions.

Maryam Nawaz Punjab Security Threats Linked to Provincial Borders

Maryam focused on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), which shares a border with Punjab. She claimed that terrorist activity was moving into Punjab from there, and that the province faces security challenges along all of its borders.

Maryam stated that despite the security situation in other parts of Pakistan, Punjab has remained reasonably safe. Her remarks come as terrorist attacks have escalated in recent years, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Both provinces share a border with Punjab, which also has an international border with India.

PTI Leader Calls Maryam Nawaz’s Remarks Insulting

Maryam’s remarks elicited a harsh response from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which runs the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

National Assembly Speaker and senior PTI leader Asad Qaisar slammed the Punjab chief minister’s remarks, calling them demeaning to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its people.

Qaisar claimed that citizens of the province had been suffering for years as a result of terrorism. He also emphasized the sacrifices made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police in their struggle against extremist attacks.

According to Qaisar, the families of police officers and others slain in the violence deserve assistance rather than words that appear to trivialize their pain.

He also blamed the federal government and earlier governments led by Nawaz Sharif for policies that, in his view, contributed to the problems facing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Criticism Grows Over Punjab’s Security Remarks

Mohsin Dawar, the president of the National Democratic Movement and a former senator, also criticized Maryam’s statement. He believed that Punjab’s political and social elites contributed to the province’s current terrorism problem.

Dawar stated that residents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been struggling with the impacts of terrorism for decades. He claimed that Punjab was only now feeling some of the pressure that other sections of the country endured for a much longer time.

Maryam’s remarks have consequently added another layer to Pakistan’s long-standing political tensions between its provinces. Critics argue that such utterances can exacerbate hostility between Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially as the latter continues to face major security issues.

For the time being, the conversation has switched away from Punjab’s security situation and toward the larger issue of how Pakistan’s provinces share responsibilities for combating terrorism and defending their citizens.
