Sydney Heatwave Brings Extreme Bushfire Risk as Temperatures Reach 33°C

The Sydney heatwave is bringing unusually hot spring weather to Australia’s largest city. Temperatures are expected to reach 33°C (91.4°F) on Saturday. At the same time, dry weather and strong winds are raising the risk of bushfires.

Authorities have imposed a complete fire ban over Sydney. The decision comes as the Greater Sydney region is classified as having a “extreme” fire hazard rating.

Sydney Heatwave Sends Temperatures Above Normal

On Saturday, temperatures in Sydney could reach 33°C. That is about 13°C higher than the average temperature for this time of year.

The heat was already rising in the morning. Temperatures at Sydney Airport hit 28.6°C (83.48°F) around 11:30 a.m. local time. The temperature was more than seven degrees higher than the usual September maximum.

However, the heat isn’t the only cause for concern. Weather forecasters predict fresh to strong northwesterly winds in the morning.

These winds could worsen fire conditions. Dry soils and exceptionally warm weather may also help fires start and spread more quickly.

Extreme Fire Danger Leads to Total Fire Ban

State fire authorities have declared a total fire ban in Sydney. They have categorized the fire hazard as “extreme,” the second highest rating.

As a result, residents must abide by the fire limitations. The ban is intended to limit the possibility of fires starting during adverse weather conditions.

Officials have issued a warning about the combination of high temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds. Together, these conditions have the potential to create a major bushfire threat across the Greater Sydney area.

El Niño Adds to Hot and Dry Weather

The current heat is due to a severe El Niño weather phenomenon in the Pacific. Forecasters predict that this El Niño will be one of the strongest in decades.

El Niño can impact weather conditions in Australia. It is likely to contribute to hotter and drier weather in southern portions of the country between September and November.

As a result, portions of Australia may suffer more challenging fire conditions in the spring season.

Australia Continues to Face Bushfire Risk

Severe bushfires have plagued Australia for many decades. Climate change is also increasing the prevalence of excessive heat and dangerous fire conditions across the country.
