Xi Jinping Washington Visit: Trump Welcomes Chinese President for Three-Day State Visit

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday as part of the Xi Jinping Washington visit. Xi arrived in the United States for a three-day state visit after being invited by Trump.

Trump and Melania Trump travelled to Joint Base Andrews to see Xi and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan. The visit comes less than six months after Xi and Trump’s latest summit.

Xi Jinping Washington Visit Focuses on Trade and Technology

The two leaders are likely to discuss a number of key problems in US-China ties. Their discussions will likely cover trade, technology, vital minerals, and other aspects of economic cooperation.

The current tariff ceasefire between the United States and China will be a crucial topic. The accord reached at the Busan meeting last October will expire in November. Officials expect its future to be discussed, along with existing chip export licenses.

However, US officials indicated no final decision had been made in advance. Washington has also refused to exchange its limits on rare earth exports for concessions from Beijing.

At the same time, conversations are underway about prospective tariff cuts for a small number of non-strategic items. Officials claimed that such adjustments may benefit both economies.

AI, Fentanyl and Other Issues on the Agenda

Artificial intelligence is likely to play a key role in the discussions. The two parties have explored concepts that have yet to be agreed upon, such as possible previews of new AI models and expanding oversight to Chinese open-source AI systems.

Prior to the meeting, US authorities did not reveal any details about Washington’s negotiation position. The topic is expected to be raised as both countries continue their discussions about technology and related measures.

Fentanyl is another concern Washington intends to raise with Beijing. According to US sources, the Trump administration continues to put pressure on China over the flow of fentanyl-making chemicals to Mexican drug cartels.

Trump is also anticipated to bring up the issue of Americans being held in Chinese prisons. The matter has been raised in past contacts between the two leaders.

Xi’s visit follows Trump’s visit to Beijing in May. During Trump’s visit, Xi hosted him at the Great Hall of the People, where the two leaders committed to strive toward a constructive, strategic, and stable partnership.

During Xi’s three-day visit to Washington, Trump is anticipated to bestow full state honours. The meetings will address a wide range of issues as the two countries continue to debate trade, technology, and broader relations.
