Pay awards by UK companies grew slightly to 3.1% in the three months ending September, but the most recent numbers indicate that wage settlements are still on a generally steady trend. According to human resources data firm Brightmine, the median rise increased from 3.0% during July and August.
Despite the minor increase, pay awards remained below those reported earlier in the year. According to the statistics, most firms did not significantly enhance their salary offers compared to the previous year.
Brightmine’s conclusions are based on 42 pay settlements reached between July 1 and September 30. The agreements covered nearly 650,000 employees in the United Kingdom.
The statistics come as other official data reveal that private sector pay growth has improved for the first time since the end of 2024. This event has boosted anticipation that the Bank of England would hike interest rates in November.
UK Pay Awards Show Only a Small Increase
The last three-month period saw the median pay award rise by 0.1 percentage point to 3.1%, up from 3.0% between July and August.
However, the rise was minor and did not indicate a significant shift in company pay decisions. According to Brightmine, the majority of settlements did not include bigger raises than those agreed upon a year ago.
The findings indicate that pay increases remain largely limited, notwithstanding recent movements in private sector wage growth. The median value is the midpoint of the pay awards analyzed, not the average rise obtained by each employee.
Brightmine’s poll includes more than 650,000 employees in the 42 settlements. The data give a snapshot of employer pay choices made during the third quarter of the year.
The data also suggests that there are limited expectations for bigger growth in the near term. According to the poll, pay awards are likely to stay at roughly 3% in 2027.
UK Pay Awards Face Pressure From Employer Costs
Employers are also faced with cost concerns, which may limit their capacity to give higher compensation increases. Brightmine cited increased employer social security contributions as one reason placing strain on firm budgets.
A projected rise in the minimum wage might exacerbate such financial obligations. Employers may need to weigh these expenses against judgments about employee pay, however the poll did not specify how much each aspect influenced individual settlements.
Policymakers are also keeping an eye on wage growth, which is why these findings are timely. Official numbers released on Tuesday revealed that private sector wage growth increased for the first time since late 2024, bolstering the argument for a probable Bank of England rate hike in November.
However, the most recent pay settlement numbers alone do not indicate whether an interest rate adjustment will occur. They demonstrate that negotiated wage increases have moved up while staying below previous levels.
The 3.1% median award is a measure of pay increases agreed upon in the most recent quarter. Employers’ view is characterized by largely constant settlements and cost pressures from employment.
According to Brightmine’s research, UK wage awards have only marginally increased, with settlements anticipated to remain around 3% in 2027. The next path of wage increase will be determined by how pay agreements and the broader economic environment evolve.
