UAE President Honours FlyDubai Captain and Crew for Saving Lives

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan commended a FlyDubai pilot and crew for their bravery after an attempted hijacking on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The medal acknowledges their efforts to safeguard passengers and return the aircraft to safety following the September 30 incident.

The captain, Smit Machchhar, was seriously injured when the aircraft’s co-pilot assaulted him inside the cockpit. Despite his injuries, Machchhar was able to unlock the cockpit door and assist passengers and other crew members in overpowering the attacker.

The UAE President bestowed the First Class Order of Zayed II upon the captain and crew members. Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum bestowed the medal and complimented their leadership throughout the situation.

The medal honours the crew’s efforts to safeguard those on FlyDubai aircraft FZ1073. The plane was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the co-pilot assaulted the Indian captain with an axe stored in the cockpit.

UAE prosecutors later labelled the event as a terrorist attack aimed at crashing the plane into Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport. The inquiry discovered that the co-pilot intended a suicide strike inspired by the 9/11 assaults in the United States.

The aeroplane dropped thousands of feet during the battle, according to the article. However, the captain’s efforts assisted other passengers on board in reaching the cockpit and restraining the assailant.

Two additional FlyDubai pilots, who were travelling as passengers, then assumed control of the plane. They redirected the aeroplane and successfully landed at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where all passengers and crew survived the tragedy.

The award recognises the flight crew’s response amid an emergency that jeopardised everyone on board. The captain’s efforts to regain entry to the cockpit allowed others to assist before the aircraft was brought under control.

Machchhar received basic medical care at a Tabuk hospital before being moved to Abu Dhabi for additional care and recuperation. His injuries were severe, but he was greatly lauded for his part in preventing more suffering during the tragedy.

On October 9, UAE prosecutors released conclusions from their inquiry into the co-pilot’s intentions. They said he was planning a suicide strike inspired by the 2001 assaults in the United States.

The captain’s acts were also recognised outside of the UAE. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised his bravery and contributions to life-saving efforts.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog thanked Machchhar. After his recovery, Herzog hopes to present him with Israel’s presidential prize for civic courage.

The UAE award acknowledges both the captain’s responsiveness despite his injuries and the crew members’ efforts to bring the plane to safety. Their actions contributed to the fact that no passengers or crew members were killed during the disaster.
