Brazil Election Results: Lula Wins as Bolsonaro Rejects Defeat

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Brazil’s presidential election with 51.8% of the vote, beating out far-right challenger Flavio Bolsonaro, who garnered 48.2%. However, Bolsonaro has refused to recognise the results, stating that he would attempt to have the election overturned.

Lula’s victory guarantees another term as Brazil’s president. In a post-election speech in São Paulo, the speaker expressed gratitude to voters and hailed the decision as a democratic choice.

Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro and an ally of US President Donald Trump, questioned the election result and alleged that irregularities needed to be examined before the outcome could be accepted.

Brazil Election Results: Lula Secures Victory

After no candidate won an absolute majority in the first round of voting on October 4, Lula emerged victorious in a second round of voting on Sunday. Although he had placed second in the first round, support began to turn in his favour in the last stages of the competition.

Between the two rounds, Lula received 10.4 million more votes. In the second round, there were about 14 million more votes available, including those from newly registered voters, those who had cast blank or invalid ballots in the first round, and supporters of candidates who had previously been eliminated. Three-fourths of these extra votes were won by Lula.

Lula praised the Brazilian people for their support during his victory address, especially the youth who had risen to the streets to preserve democracy.

Additionally, he spoke on Brazil’s independence in international affairs, stating that the nation will not tolerate being treated like a backyard. His comments coincided with criticism of Trump’s attempts to increase US influence in Latin America.

Lula also saw the outcome as a loss for what he referred to as falsehoods and denialism. His win comes after far-right candidates lost in a number of Latin American nations, and it is a blow to the Bolsonaro-affiliated political movement.

Brazil Election Results: Bolsonaro Seeks Annulment

According to Flavio Bolsonaro, he cannot accept the outcome and plans to ask for the election to be declared void. He questioned judgements taken throughout the voting process and accused the authorities of misconduct.

Bolsonaro brought up a number of issues, including the two-hour vote extension. Both candidates had, nonetheless, requested the prolongation. Lula claimed that public transit had been purposefully hindered in places where he had done well in the first round, while Bolsonaro said that floods in a region where he had great support had impacted his campaign.

Bolsonaro further charged that during the election, the Supreme Court had altered the regulations. Although he has not acknowledged Lula’s win, he would need to ask electoral officials for a review in order to formally contest it.

Election results in Brazil were contested in 2014 and 2022, but both attempts were turned down. The nation has never had a presidential election declared void. Bolsonaro’s party was fined 22 million reais by a court in 2022 after it contested the outcome without offering proof.

The current dispute’s conditions are exceptional, according to legal experts. According to Fernando Neisser, a professor of electoral law, an election may be declared void if the margin was incredibly close and there was proof that polling places had been open longer in regions that were overwhelmingly in favour of one candidate.

With an advantage of 3.6 percentage points, Lula has won the presidency. Bolsonaro’s request for annulment now focuses on whether he can provide enough proof for electoral officials to examine the outcome.
