UK Street Racing Case: Two Indian-Origin Men Jailed for 28 Years

UK Street Racing Case : Two Indian-origin males have received 28-year prison terms in connection with a horrific traffic collision in northern England that killed a 27-year-old woman and her four-year-old daughter. The incident occurred in January 2023 when the two were walking to school on Scott Hall Road.

Jasskamal Riyat, 37, and Hardeep Bhachu, 29, were racing a BMW M135i and an Audi TT RS just before the incident. In June 2024, a jury convicted Riyat guilty of two counts of causing death by unsafe driving, while Bhachu accepted responsibility.

The victims, Justyna Hulboj and her daughter Lena Czepczor, died on the spot after Bhachu lost control of his Audi and hit them.

Riyat was condemned to 16 years in jail, and Bhachu received a 12-year sentence. Both men were also barred from driving for six years, and they must pass extended driving tests before being allowed to drive again.

UK Street Racing Case Ends With 28-Year Combined Sentence

The court heard that the guys did not know one other prior to the encounter. Shortly before the incident, they came to a halt at a traffic signal and chatted through their sports cars’ windows.

Evidence produced at the trial included footage from Bhachu’s dashcam and a recording from Riyat’s phone. The tapes captured the interaction between the drivers before they began racing. Riyat was said to have encouraged Bhachu while they talked their automobiles.

Riyat accelerated first, followed by Bhachu. Bhachu lost control of the Audi while driving at over 90 mph on a road with a speed restriction of 40 mph.

The automobile climbed the pavement near a Jaguar showroom and struck Hulboj and Lena as they walked along the road. Both died at the site.

Bhachu pleaded guilty in June 2024 to causing death through reckless driving. Riyat disputed culpability, but was found guilty when the evidence, including film of the race, was evaluated during the trial.

When pronouncing sentence, Judge Ray Singh underlined the consequences of racing on public roadways. He stated that a public road was not a racing track and cautioned against using powerful cars to test their limits on public routes.

UK Street Racing Case Brings Long Wait for Justice

The sentencing also concluded a protracted criminal justice procedure for the victims’ families. Detective Inspector Paul Conroy of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Inquiry Team stated the fatalities were caused by the men’s conduct.

Conroy said that no penalty could compensate for the death of the mother and her baby daughter. He also highlighted that it had been more than two years since Bhachu confessed his role in the tragedy, and that the family had suffered as a result of the wait for justice.

The police officer stated that the end of the sentence procedure was significant for Justyna and Lena’s family. After the court sessions, he offered his sympathy for the family.

Riyat was sentenced to 16 years in jail and Bhachu to 12 years, as well as driving bans and prolonged test requirements for both men.

The court’s judgements came after a deadly crash caused by a race between two automobiles on a route with a 40-mph speed limit. The deaths of Hulboj and her daughter dominated the dangerous-driving case.
