PM Modi SCO Summit: Modi Says No Double Standards on Terrorism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong message on terrorism at the PM Modi SCO Summit in Bishkek, saying countries must take a united position against terrorism. His remarks came in the presence of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

Modi stated that there should be no double standards when dealing with terrorism. He advocated for a collaborative effort to disrupt the larger structure that supports terrorist actions.

Speaking during the meeting, Modi stated that terrorism cannot be tackled selectively. He stated that countries must cooperate together to combat terrorism and tackle the networks that allow it to thrive.

The Indian prime minister also mentioned various aspects of the larger terrorist system, such as finance, recruitment, and radicalization. He also urged action against safe havens utilized by terrorist groups.

His comments came as SCO leaders met in Bishkek to discuss regional and international challenges. Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s prime minister, was also present at the meeting.

Modi Calls for Dialogue Instead of War

Along with his words about terrorism, Modi emphasized the importance of diplomacy in resolving disputes. He stated that wars and conflicts cannot bring long-term solutions and should instead be addressed via discussion.

Modi also discussed the Russia-Ukraine crisis with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the SCO summit. He stated that India has constantly supported efforts to achieve peace.

According to the prime minister, every day of conflict is a setback for humanity, whereas efforts toward peace bring hope. He advocated for the end of long-running disputes and the search for peaceful solutions as soon as feasible.

Modi also mentioned the shared theme of peace connected with Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha. He stated that India continues to support the path of peace and is looking forward to resolving these problems with Russia.

The war between Russia and Ukraine continues to have an impact on international relations, security, and the global economy. India has insisted that discourse and diplomacy are the best approaches to resolve issues.

Who Are the Members of the SCO?

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was founded in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

India and Pakistan become full members of the organization in 2017. Iran became as a full member in 2023, while Belarus joined in 2024.

Turkmenistan is the only Central Asian country that is not a member of the SCO; Afghanistan and Mongolia are observers, and Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Saudi Arabia are dialog partners.

The Bishkek summit brings together leaders and representatives from SCO member countries to discuss security, regional cooperation, and broader world concerns.
