According to the Taxpayers’ Union-Curia Poll, the governing coalition of the National Party, New Zealand First, and ACT is expected to gain 61 seats in the 120-member Parliament.

That would give the coalition a one-seat majority, allowing it to remain in power but leaving little room for political failures.

The opposition bloc, comprising the Labour Party, Green Party, Te Pāti Māori, and Opportunity Party, is expected to win 59 seats. The findings demonstrate how closely contested the forthcoming election has become as voters prepare to go to the polls on November 7, 2026.

Opportunity Party Gains Momentum in New Zealand Election Poll

One of the most notable developments in the survey is the Opportunity Party’s (TOP) good performance. The centrist party earned 6.1% of the vote, the first time it has passed the 5% threshold required to enter Parliament under New Zealand’s electoral system.

If the party maintains its current level of popularity until election day, it will become the first new political party to achieve parliamentary representation in almost 20 years.

The poll also shows that the Labour Party may lose five seats, with much of that support shifting to the Opportunity Party. Political analysts believe this demonstrates increased voter interest in alternatives to the country’s established big parties.

The survey, which included 1,000 voters, was conducted between August 1 and August 4 by telephone and online interviews.

Luxon stated that the Opportunity Party’s policies, particularly its taxation policy, are incompatible with those of the National Party.

The poll also finds that Luxon remains the country’s preferred candidate for prime minister, with his personal popularity rising by more than four percentage points since the previous survey.

MMP Debate Adds Pressure Before the Election

Luxon performed the survey before stating that if his administration is re-elected, he will consider holding a referendum on New Zealand’s Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system.

His remarks provoked swift criticism from coalition partners.

Winston Peters, leader of New Zealand First, described the notion as “inexplicable,” while the ACT Party stated that it would reject any move to alter or review the current election system.

Following fears that smaller political parties would be disadvantaged under the former first-past-the-post model, New Zealand implemented the MMP voting method in 1996. In a 2011 referendum, voters voted to preserve the MMP system, with 58% backing its retention.
