North Korea has hinted that its retaliation to what it views hostile measures by the United States may intensify. Kim Yo Jong, the important sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has refused discussions with Washington and denied US allegations tying Pyongyang to a huge cryptocurrency crime.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim chastised the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for accusing North Korea for stealing more than $6 billion in bitcoin assets from Binance.
She cited the charge as another indication of Washington’s antagonistic attitude against her country. Kim also stated that North Korea does not now see a cause to engage in direct conversations with US authorities.
Her statements come as anticipation grows over a possible summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un later this month. However, Pyongyang has yet to react to Trump’s earlier invitation to meet with the North Korean leader.
Kim Yo Jong Rejects US Dialogue Over North Korea Policy
Kim stated that Washington must modify its policy to North Korea before any genuine conversations can take place. She claimed that renouncing its antagonistic attitude toward the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), as North Korea is officially known, is critical to resolving unresolved concerns.
She also questioned the credibility of US officials and dismissed the concept of meeting with representatives who continue to pursue what she described as a confrontational agenda.
Kim’s comments also featured condemnation of previous American acts. These included joint military drills between the United States and South Korea, Washington’s demand for North Korea’s denuclearization, and a US State Department study on human trafficking worldwide.
North Korea was mentioned in the State Department report, which became a source of contention in her statements.
Kim stated that the United States continues to send hostile signals, and that Pyongyang was prepared to respond more forcefully.
Her words indicate that North Korea maintains its view that a change in Washington’s policy is required before conversations can proceed. She did not express any inclination to resume communication under the existing conditions.
Kim Yo Jong’s Remarks Complicate Trump-Kim Meeting Prospects
The most recent remarks coincide with the ongoing focus on the potential for Trump and Kim Jong Un to resume communication. Trump expressed his desire to see the North Korean leader later this year in August.
North Korea has not yet responded on that suggestion, though. Additionally, there is no evidence in Kim Yo Jong’s most recent remarks that Pyongyang is prepared to interact with Washington at this time.
South Korea has also expressed skepticism about the prospect of a summit. Seoul believes there is now minimal likelihood of a summit between Pyongyang and Washington, a top South Korean official told reporters last week.
Despite Trump’s open eagerness in seeing Kim, this evaluation is made. The planned meeting is questionable since North Korea has not responded.
Kim Yo Jong’s remarks also demonstrate that the US criticism of North Korea, denuclearization, and military operations continue to be the key points of contention between the two nations.
As of right moment, Pyongyang has not publicly accepted Washington’s invitation of a summit. Instead, Kim’s most recent comments emphasize that before any direct interaction can occur, the United States must alter its strategy.
