CJP Leaders Get 5-Day Judicial Custody After Jantar Mantar Protest

Two Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, have been put in judicial detention for five days following a protest at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. They were detained, along with Ajinkya Shinde, for reportedly jumping police barricades to enter the protest location.

The three men were arrested on Tuesday morning after shouting slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They are charged with trespassing, breaking bond conditions, and impeding a public official from executing their duties.

Das, Ranka, and Shinde appeared before a magistrate on Mandir Marg in Delhi about 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Das and Ranka were sentenced to five days in judicial custody.

CJP Leaders Face Fresh Action Over Jantar Mantar Protest

According to Delhi Police sources, Das and Ranka allegedly violated Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) yet again. The two had previously signed bonds pledging to keep the peace for a year, and authorities claim that their recent activities violated those requirements.

During a previous rally in the national capital on Saturday, the two leaders were held and later released after providing Rs 50,000 bonds each. They agreed not to become engaged in any incident that could disrupt public order during the coming year.

Police are treating the latest suspected infractions as repeat crimes. Trespassing, bond violations, and interference with the functions of a public officer are among the charges levelled against the three individuals.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke declared on X that Das and Ranka had been ordered to five days in judicial custody. He condemned the conduct and accused the government of quelling dissent.

Ratna Singh, the party’s legal team leader, also posted about the arrests on X. She stated that the three leaders were held at Parliament Street Police Station in connection with the Jantar Mantar affair.

Singh also said that the men were not allowed to see their lawyers until late at nite and were driven to the police station in a private van about 3 a.m. These allegations were made by the party’s legal team.

CJP Leaders’ Custody Follows Changes to Delhi Protest Sites

The case comes as CJP and other parties protest suspected anomalies in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of election registers. The demonstrations have also included demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

On October 11, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar issued an order designating Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground for rallies and demonstrations. The ruling also took Jantar Mantar from the list of permitted demonstration sites.

The CJP has opposed the proposal, stating that moving protests away from central Delhi will make them less visible and less effective.

The debate over protest venues has heightened tensions between the party and the state, as protests over electoral record revision continue. The most recent court action is about the alleged breaking of earlier bond restrictions and the events at Jantar Mantar.

The court has ordered that Das and Ranka remain in judicial custody for five days. The claims levelled against the three leaders are still being investigated.
