Thousands of people took part in pro-Palestinian marches across Australia on Sunday, with rallies conducted in 27 cities and towns to highlight the ongoing suffering in Gaza. The widespread protests marked three years since Israel launched its military assault on Palestinian land.
Sydney had a large crowd at Hyde Park, with organisers estimating that over 5,000 people gathered before marching through the city center. Many participants voiced dissatisfaction with the state and federal Labour governments’ approach to the issue.
The demonstrations included activists, legislators, medical experts, and members of the Jewish community. Speakers urged stronger protection for Palestinians and questioned how pro-Palestinian voices were handled in public debate.
Australia Gaza Protests Bring Crowds Into City Streets
According to Yasmine Johnson of the Palestine Action Group, the demonstrations were held to honour those who died while also drawing attention to the conflict’s larger history. She explained that demonstrators wanted to continue supporting Palestinians and demanding change.
Mehreen Faruqi, a Greens politician, also addressed the Sydney gathering. She chastised politicians and media outlets for attempting to curtail pro-Palestinian protests and public expression.
Faruqi accused the Australian Labour government of failing to take firmer action against Israel over the past three years. She cited the lack of sanctions against Israel and the continuation of military commerce as issues that needed addressed.
She also stated that the high attendance demonstrated that Palestinian supporters desire to continue keeping the administration responsible. Her statements reflected many demonstrators’ dissatisfaction with Australia’s attitude to the conflict.
Bushra Othman, a Melbourne surgeon who has completed three medical missions to Gaza, discussed the hazards confronting Palestinian healthcare workers. She detailed incidents in which Palestinians were allegedly shot at by Israeli tanks while going down Salah al-Din Road, while ambulances were unable to reach injured individuals.
Othman also contested the characterisation of Gaza’s conditions as a ceasefire, referring to an agreement reached between Israel and Hamas in October 2025. She claimed that the word distracted attention away from the destruction that was taking place.
Australia Gaza Protests Focus on Civilian Suffering
The protests took place against the backdrop of the hostilities that erupted following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Approximately 1,200 people were killed in that incident, and 251 more were kidnaped by the Gaza-based group, which Australia and its allies consider a terrorist organization.
The human cost in Gaza has been high. According to Palestinian health officials, Israeli bombings have killed over 74,000 people and injured 175,000 others.
Grace Tame, Australian of the Year, also addressed the crowd. Despite prior criticism for her statements on the war, she stated that her support for the cause is centred on reducing bloodshed.
Allon Uhlmann, a member of Jews Against the Occupation, joined the march in solidarity with Palestinians. He stated that members of the Jewish community were appalled by the attacks on Palestinians and wanted to stand in solidarity with those demanding change.
The rallies in 27 Australian cities and towns demonstrated that the issue remains a focal point of public protests across the country. Participants utilised the statewide event to memorialise victims, express their concern about human suffering, and call on political leaders to act.
