US President Donald Trump has announced a plan to introduce Russian diesel supply to American and worldwide markets as his administration works to cut soaring gasoline costs ahead of the midterm elections on November 3. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticised the action, arguing that relaxing sanctions on Moscow without a long-term reduction in fighting may allow Russia to continue its war against Ukraine.
Trump announced that Russia has agreed to send more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately. He also detailed further supplies for the coming months, tying the announcement to his objective of making petroleum more cheap for American farmers, ranchers, and truckers.
The declaration came after a phone chat between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump also stated that as part of the deal, he had reduced sanctions against Moscow.
Trump Seeks Lower Fuel Costs With Russian Diesel
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Russia would deliver more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel to American and worldwide markets. He further stated that another 500,000 tonnes would come in November, followed by another 1 million tonnes immediately after.
Trump stated that decreasing pricing for Americans are his main focus, particularly for those working in agriculture and transportation. He deemed the announcement significant and projected a dramatic drop in diesel costs in the United States and other regions.
The US president also mentioned the Strait of Hormuz while addressing his oil price predictions. He insisted that Washington will not let Iran build a nuclear weapon.
The statement comes ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, as the administration looks to confront the mounting oil problem. However, the decision to relax sanctions on Russia has sparked worry in Ukraine, where officials have regularly denounced Russian energy purchases.
Zelenskyy Criticises Trump’s Russia Policy
Zelenskyy described the move as an investment in a battle that should be ended, not extended. He stated that Ukraine sought serious actions to alleviate tensions and relied on fair help from the United States.
The Ukrainian president stated that Kyiv has already taken similar actions to de-escalate the war. He offered that Ukraine refrain from assaulting Russian oil refineries if Moscow ceased targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Zelenskyy contended that Washington has the authority to facilitate such an accord. He also cited recent European moves to relax sanctions against Russian oligarchs, claiming that attacks on Ukraine intensified as a result, killing dozens and injuring many others.
He argued that Russia was unable to fulfill its military aims and was becoming increasingly reliant on strikes on Ukrainian cities. He also accused Moscow of pursuing accords that would relieve pressure on Russia and give it more time to pursue the battle.
Zelenskyy warned that loosening limitations without a clear and long-term deal to lessen hostilities would benefit Russia. According to him, such a step would allow Moscow to continue its strikes, prolonging the war and causing further damage outside of Ukraine.
The dispute demonstrates the disparity between Trump’s declared goal of lowering energy costs and Zelenskyy’s call for more pressure on Moscow. While Trump anticipates greater Russian diesel supply to help down costs, Ukraine wants any sanctions relief to be contingent on serious and long-term de-escalation.
