US Treasury sanctions : The US Treasury imposed financial restrictions on eight Canadian money service organizations for suspected dealings with Iranian entities subject to US sanctions. The measure prevents the corporations from accessing the US financial system and limits their interactions with American persons and organizations.
The measure applies to firms in Ontario and British Columbia. It is part of Washington’s broader campaign to disrupt banking networks that it claims help Iran circumvent US sanctions.
According to the sanctions, any assets held by the targeted firms in the United States would be banned. They will also be restricted from transacting with US individuals or companies. As a result, the penalties limit their ability to use the dollar-based financial system.
US Treasury sanctions cover eight Canadian businesses
The Treasury mentioned eight companies in its announcement. These include Diverse Trade Inc, also known as Million Exchange, and 1380079 BC Limited.
Top PC Technician Inc, NIA Nations Currency Ltd, and 2397639 Ontario Ltd (doing business as Farah Exchange) are the other recognized businesses. The list also contains CCC Inc, B Galaxy Inc, and Darvish Exchange.
The government claims that these organizations facilitated transactions with Iranian entities that were already subject to US sanctions. However, the notice provides no more information on the particular transactions involving each firm.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Canada should not become a safe haven for financial facilitators suspected of assisting Iran and its affiliated groups in evading sanctions.
He also stated that the department will attempt to damage the Iranian regime’s financial lines, wherever they operate. His words reflect Washington’s persistent attention on financial activity outside the United States that it believes facilitates sanctions evasion.
The current sanctions follow previous Treasury efforts against corporations that operate outside of the United States. These actions are intended to limit the financial channels that sanctioned Iranian organizations may employ.
US Treasury sanctions also target MEXC Global
In a separate action, the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Investigation Network (FinCEN) issued an order against the virtual currency exchange MEXC Global.
The Seychelles-based platform is being cut off from the US banking system due to transactions that FinCEN claims are related to sanctions evasion including Iran, North Korea, and Russia.
The ruling prohibits US banking institutions from executing fund transfers with MEXC Global. This implies that American banks and other covered institutions are unable to process the transfers under the policy.
FinCEN, which works under the Treasury Department on anti-money laundering issues, stated that MEXC Global facilitated at least $16 billion in unlawful transactions connected to Iran, North Korea, and Russia. It also referenced transactions involving other sanctioned actors.
The action against MEXC Global is distinct from the penalties levied on the eight Canadian money service corporations. Both restrictions, however, are focused on financial conduits that US officials claim have been utilized to fund sanctioned parties’ activities.
The Treasury’s disclosures reveal that it is targeting several sorts of financial services, including currency firms and virtual currency exchanges, as part of its attempts to impose US sanctions.
The most recent US Treasury measures target financial institutions suspected of financing transactions related to sanctioned nations. Eight Canadian money services businesses face limitations for suspected Iran-related conduct, while MEXC Global has been barred from accessing the US financial system for transactions involving Iran, North Korea, and Russia. These actions demonstrate Washington’s ongoing attempts to limit financial conduits that it believes are being exploited to avoid US sanctions.
