Turkey Pakistan Saudi Arabia : Turkey and Pakistan are preparing to rapidly deploy military soldiers to Saudi Arabia following the three nations’ agreement to implement their new collective defence framework. The decision comes as Saudi Arabia is facing a number of attacks linked to the unrest in neighbouring Yemen.
The decision was revealed following an emergency meeting of representatives from Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on Monday. The three countries stated they had committed to take urgent action to supply the military forces and capabilities outlined in their defence pledges.
The pact follows the Mecca Joint Defence pact, which was signed by the three countries in August. The pact requires members to help one another if any of them are attacked.
The recent move gives the deal an actual military dimension, with Turkey and Pakistan poised to rapidly send forces to Saudi Arabia. However, the joint statement did not specify what roles the troops would perform once they arrived in the country.
Turkey Pakistan Saudi Arabia Strengthen Collective Defence
During the Riyadh meeting, the three countries discussed recent attacks on Saudi Arabia, particularly those on the holy towns of Mecca and Medina.
According to their joint declaration, the countries strongly oppose any attack or threat to Saudi Arabia’s security and territorial integrity. When alluding to the recent attacks, the statement did not mention Yemen’s Houthis by name.
The defence treaty brings together Turkey, NATO’s second-largest army, Pakistan, the Islamic world’s only nuclear-armed state, and Saudi Arabia, the Gulf’s dominant force.
The countries have now committed to proceed expeditiously with the military obligations outlined in the August accord. Their representatives stated that the appropriate steps would be made to supply the agreed-upon forces and capabilities while also ensuring their speedy deployment within Saudi Arabia.
There were no specifics provided concerning the strength of the forces participating or their specific military function.
Turkey Pakistan Saudi Arabia Respond to Regional Attacks
Since Yemen’s civil conflict resumed in July, Saudi Arabia has been the target of numerous Houthi attacks. The attacks have hit Saudi cities, oil infrastructure, and ships.
The situation deteriorated further in September, when the Houthis began a new onslaught and seized substantial portions of Yemen’s Saudi-backed government.
On Monday, the government launched a counteroffensive with Riyadh’s backing. The stated goal is to reclaim all Houthi-held territory, including places that have been under Houthi control for more than a decade.
As a result, Saudi Arabia’s latest defence move comes as the battle in Yemen continues to have an impact on its security concerns. Turkey and Pakistan’s planned deployment is the first practical step toward executing the three nations’ collective military agreements, according to the joint statement.
The statement, however, does not specify the particular role of the deployed personnel. The immediate focus is on organising the agreed-upon military capabilities and ensuring their prompt arrival in Saudi Arabia.
