Trump Netanyahu Tensions: Vance Says Trump Will Break With Netanyahu When Needed

Trump Netanyahu tensions have come into focus again after US Vice President JD Vance said President Donald Trump is prepared to disagree with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when the interests of the American people and Israel do not match.

Vance made the statements on Tuesday while speaking at the All-In Podcast Summit. He said that Trump has demonstrated a willingness to dissent with Netanyahu when it is in the best interests of the United States.

Vance referred to Netanyahu as “Bibi” and saw him as a key colleague. At the same time, he said that the two nations’ tight connection did not need Washington and Jerusalem to agree on every topic.

Trump Netanyahu Tensions Over US Foreign Policy

Vance said that there may be occasions in which Netanyahu’s attitude makes sense from Israel’s perspective, but the United States may choose to go a different course.

He emphasised that American strategy in West Asia should be based on US interests rather than on the Israeli government. Vance also contrasted the connection with Israel to America’s alliances with other NATO members.

The vice president said that although the United States has many vital partnerships via NATO, this does not imply that its European foreign policy should become “subservient to NATO.” He said that the same concept should guide Washington’s Middle East strategy.

Vance said that the US would collaborate with other nations when their objectives are similar, disagree where their perspectives diverge, and continue to pursue what it deems America’s interests.

Vance Had Made Similar Comments in June

The current statements are similar to those made by Vance in June, when he said that US and Israeli objectives do not always align. He said at the time that when the two nations adopted opposing viewpoints, Washington would do what it thought was best for Americans.

Vance had also said that Netanyahu had “certainly gotten some things wrong,” but did not provide particular instances. He said that such topics were best handled privately.

Despite their disagreements, Vance described Netanyahu as a good partner and said that the US government will continue to cooperate with Israel.

The remarks come as the Trump administration maintains tight military ties with Israel. The United States is also considering a $2.8 billion weapons deal for Israel, according to The Associated Press.

The suggested package has 40,000 2,000-pound bombs. However, the agreement has not been signed, and the majority of the purchase will be paid by US foreign military funding.

Vance’s recent remarks highlight a gap between the administration’s tight military alliance with Israel and its attitude that Washington would make its own judgements when US and Israeli interests diverge.
