The South Korea US investment plan is facing a delay after the government asked to postpone a parliamentary briefing scheduled for Thursday. The briefing was due to cover Seoul’s plans for investment in the United States, South Korea’s industry ministry said on Wednesday.
The ministry did not disclose any information on the reason for the request. The planned event was scheduled to take place before South Korea and the United States finalised the parameters of a significant Korean investment commitment in the United States.
On Tuesday, lawmakers said the parliamentary debate was likely to be one of the final steps before the two countries agreed on the specifics of the investment deal.
South Korea US investment plan involves $350 billion
The investment intentions are tied to a trade agreement signed by US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in October. Under the terms of the deal, South Korea agreed to spend $350 billion in US manufacturing.
In exchange, Washington promised to cap South Korean import duties to 15%. The investment pledge spans multiple industries, with a significant chunk already reserved for the shipbuilding industry.
South Korea has set aside $150 billion of the entire $350 billion for shipbuilding projects in the US. The remaining $200 billion is still being worked out as Seoul and Washington examine potential investment opportunities.
The two governments have been working on the terms of those projects, but the details have yet to be finalised. The postponed parliamentary briefing was expected to give lawmakers more information about Seoul’s plans.
Talks continue over remaining $200 billion
The delay occurs as South Korea and the United States negotiate how the investment pledge will be structured. The $200 billion that was not assigned to shipbuilding is still being considered for other projects.
The industry ministry said that the government had requested a postponement of Thursday’s briefing, but declined to elaborate. The information issued by the government did not include a new date for the parliamentary briefing.
The investment package is part of a larger economic pact between Seoul and Washington. South Korea’s vow to invest in U.S. manufacturing coincided with the agreement on a 15% tariff rate on Korean imports.
For the time being, the two parties are working on projects worth the remaining $200 billion. Further details are likely as Seoul and Washington strive to finalise the investment terms.
