Saudi Arabia Travel Alert : The United States has warned its people in Saudi Arabia to stay vigilant and follow local safety advice following suspected missile and drone attacks that heightened security worries around the Kingdom’s airports. On October 19, the US Embassy issued a security alert advising Americans to follow emergency notifications received by Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence and plan for potential travel disruptions.
The alert raises the likelihood of additional attacks, airspace closures, and aircraft disruptions. The embassy encouraged travellers to check their flight status directly with airlines and airports before departing.
The advisory also details restrictions on US federal employees, guidelines for sharing information about military activities, and procedures Americans can take to get emergency alerts.
Saudi Arabia Travel Alert: Airport Status and Flight Advice
The embassy’s statement stated that operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh were suspended. King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam were open, albeit some delays and cancellations were recorded.
Travellers were urged to confirm their departure information with their carriers or the appropriate airports. In the event that air travel is hampered, the embassy also suggested exploring private automobiles, trains, or buses.
Land border crossings remained open, including the King Fahd Causeway that connects Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Roads and highways in and around Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran were all reported to be open.
The caution stated that if additional assaults occur, airport operations and travel conditions may alter. Americans were consequently asked to exercise extreme caution and heed the advice of Saudi officials.
The embassy also stated that US federal employees in Saudi Arabia must seek special permission from the Chief of Mission before utilising any airport in the Kingdom.
Separate travel restrictions apply to US federal officials near Yemen’s border. Travel within 20 miles of the border is prohibited, and visits to Jizan, Asir, and Najran provinces, as well as Qatif, Yanbu, and Taif, require special permission.
Saudi Arabia Travel Alert: Safety Rules for Americans
The US Embassy warned Americans from photographing or sharing information regarding missile interceptions, drone activity, or impact locations. Citing Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior, the advisory warned that photographing or publishing such information could result in legal consequences.
Americans were also warned to avoid protests and huge gatherings, keep an eye on local news, and exercise caution in areas linked with the United States. Another important aspect of the embassy’s safety guidelines was to follow local authorities’ recommendations.
The warning comes as Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree alleges that Saudi forces conducted 110 airstrikes and missile attacks throughout different Yemeni governorates in 24 hours. According to Saree, the attacks claimed the lives of around 30 people, the most of them were women and children. The offered information does not include any independent verification of these data and assertions.
For disaster preparedness, the embassy advised keeping mobile phones charged and participating in the US State Department’s Smart Traveller Enrolment Program (STEP). The service provides residents with security updates and assists the embassy in communicating with them during emergencies.
The alert stated that regular and emergency consular services for US citizens remain accessible.
The main message of the October 19 advisory is for Americans in Saudi Arabia to watch official warnings, confirm travel plans, and follow local safety recommendations. With airport operations disrupted in some areas, travellers should check for updated information before embarking on journeys.
