Luxembourg Airport Drones Trigger Temporary Flight Suspension

Luxembourg Airport drones caused a temporary suspension of flight operations on Saturday after unauthorised unmanned aircraft were spotted near the runway and later over the airport area. Authorities halted flights as a precaution to protect passengers, airline crews, airport workers and aircraft.

The airport subsequently reported that regular flights had resumed. According to the statement, the decision to halt flights was made after drones were spotted near and then above the airport.

Luxembourg Airport Drones Prompt Safety Measures

Airport officials have not revealed where the drones originated from or identified the persons who operate them. They said that they were continue to monitor the situation and evaluate any potential concerns.

Passengers may still be affected by the interim closure, with the airport warning of delays and more air traffic disruptions.

The airport said that its goal was to preserve safety while the situation was being watched. Flights were able to resume when the interim halt was removed.

Luxembourg Airport Drones Incident Follows Other Sightings

The incident in Luxembourg follows reports of drone sightings at several European airports this month.

Earlier in September, operations at Brussels Airport were halted for roughly 30 minutes when a drone was discovered. Skeyes, a Belgian air traffic control operator, said that their drone policy requires runway traffic to be halted for 30 minutes after the most recent verified sighting.

A separate occurrence occurred in Lithuania on September 13. Authorities in Vilnius briefly shuttered the airport after a suspected drone was seen near it.

The sighting also prompted NATO to deploy at least one fighter plane. However, the item was eventually discovered to be a flock of birds.

Luxembourg Airport officials have not yet revealed more information regarding the drones involved in Saturday’s incident. Passengers have been told to anticipate delays as airport authorities continue to monitor aviation traffic and nearby areas.
