India Canada CEPA : India and Canada are working fast to reestablish economic relations, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hailing the planned India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) as a “game changer” for businesses and people. The remark was issued during Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s high-level visit to Ottawa with one of the largest Indian corporate delegations ever dispatched to Canada.
The visit marks a significant breakthrough in bilateral relations following years of diplomatic tensions that hampered trade discussions. During his three-day visit, Goyal met with Carney and many Canadian ministers with the goal of increasing trade, investment, and strategic partnerships.
According to officials, both countries are currently striving to finalize the CEPA trade deal by the end of 2026. The agreement is expected to increase collaboration in areas like as energy, agriculture, technology, education, and manufacturing.
India Canada CEPA Talks Gain Speed With Strong Political Support
Following his discussion with Goyal, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada views India as a key long-term economic partner. He pointed out that the planned free trade agreement may provide Canadian businesses with access to one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing marketplaces.
Goyal also expressed optimism regarding the future of bilateral relations. He said Carney’s recent visit to India helped establish “fresh momentum” in the relationship and encouraged both sides to accelerate economic collaboration.
The Indian minister noted that both governments hope to quadruple bilateral trade to about $50 billion by 2030. According to trade experts, the CEPA has the potential to lower tariffs, boost investment prospects, and facilitate market access for enterprises in both countries.
The Canadian side also emphasized prospects in clean energy, agri-food exports, educational collaborations, and advanced technology businesses. Business representatives traveling with Goyal are slated to engage with Canadian corporations and trade groups in Ottawa and Toronto.
India Canada CEPA Deal Seen as Key Step to Reset Relations
The 2023 death of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada strained relations between India and Canada. During that time, trade talks were halted, causing company and investor concern.
However, political officials on both sides now appear to be focusing on repairing confidence through economic cooperation. According to analysts, changing global trade conditions and increased economic competitiveness are prompting countries such as India and Canada to expand ties.
Carney’s administration has recently focused closer connections with rising global economies, while India continues to expand commercial links with Western countries. According to experts, a good CEPA deal might increase both commerce flows and diplomatic stability between the two democracies.
For corporations, the agreement might open up new prospects in exports, technology exchange, mining, education, and sustainable energy investment. However, commentators fear that political hurdles and security concerns may continue to affect future negotiations.
Nonetheless, the current talks are considered as one of the clearest indications yet that India and Canada are serious about embarking on a new economic chapter together.
