According to President Lula, Trump stated that the “economic growth of the United States and Brazil is positive for the region as a whole.”

Lula declared, “We welcomed the good relationship built in recent months, which resulted in the lifting of a significant portion of the tariffs applied to Brazilian products.”

The Brazilian President stated that he had “reiterated the proposal, sent to the State Department in December, to strengthen cooperation in combating organized crime.”

He also expressed interest in “tightening the partnership in combating money laundering and arms trafficking, as well as freezing criminal groups’ assets and exchanging data on financial transactions,” adding that the suggestion was “well received by the US president.”

Concerning bigger international concerns, Lula wrote, “Regarding the Peace Council, I proposed that the body presented by the United States be limited to the Gaza issue and provide a seat for Palestine.”

He further stated: “In that context, I reiterated the importance of a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, which includes expanding the permanent members of the Security Council.”

He also mentioned Venezuela, stating, “We exchanged impressions on the situation in Venezuela.” I highlighted the significance of maintaining regional peace and stability while also fighting for the Venezuelan people’s well-being.”

Separately, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Lula discussed bilateral relations in a recent conversation, emphasizing the importance of reformed multilateralism in addressing shared global concerns.

“Delighted to speak with President Lula. We evaluated the tremendous momentum in the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership, which is expected to reach new heights in the coming year,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on social media.

“Our strong cooperation is critical in furthering the Global South’s common interests. He said, “I look forward to welcoming him to India soon.”

Lula had already announced intentions for a state visit to India in early 2026 and was working with BRICS countries, now chaired by India, to respond to tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, which had an impact on both India and Brazil.

According to an official readout, PM Narendra Modi and Lula reviewed their meetings in Brazil and South Africa last year and acknowledged progress in a variety of sectors of cooperation, including commerce, investment, technology, defense, energy, health, agriculture, and people-to-people interactions.

They also exchanged views on regional and global issues, emphasizing the “importance of reformed multilateralism in addressing shared challenges.”

BRICS Cooperation and Global Trade Challenges

India and Brazil are members of the BRICS organization, which Trump has often criticized for allegedly attempting to undercut the US currency through trading in national currencies.

Upcoming High-Level Engagements Between India and Brazil

The PM Modi-Lula meeting takes place amid continued tariff-related tensions between New Delhi and Washington.

Trump recently voiced confidence in completing a “good” trade deal with India, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “fantastic leader” and “great friend.”
“I have high regard for your Prime Minister (Modi). He’s a terrific dude and a buddy of mine. “We are going to have a good deal,” Trump stated.

He subsequently said, “India wanted to make me happy.” Modi is a nice guy, and he realized I wasn’t happy. And it was crucial to make me happy. We can impose taxes on them pretty rapidly.”

The US government had previously slapped additional tariffs on Brazilian products, some of which were eventually lifted, including taxes on food exports.
