Strait of Hormuz Oil Tanker : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported Monday that an oil ship caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after colliding with a naval mine. The incident follows a string of reported tanker fires in the key canal, where shipping movements have been restricted.
The Guards claimed the vessel collided with a mine south of the strait while operating on an illegal path. The explosion apparently caused a fire in the ship’s engine room.
According to Iranian official media, the tanker shut down its positioning and navigation systems prior to the disaster. The Guards also stated that the vessel was violating their regulations.
The message did not name the tanker or disclose information regarding casualties, the extent of the damage, or the ship’s eventual destination.
Strait of Hormuz Oil Tanker Hit by Naval Mine
The latest event followed a previous notification by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards the day before. At the time, the force stated two oil tankers had caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after colliding with mines.
The recurrent reports come as Iran seeks tighter control over maritime movements in the strait. The Guards have cautioned ships not to turn off their navigation equipment when travelling through the area.
Earlier this week, the force’s naval commander, Admiral Ali Ozmaei, stated that vessels that deactivate their navigation equipment would be considered hostile. The warning emphasises Iran’s prioritisation of monitoring ships moving through the strait.
Iran seized control of the waterway in late February, when conflict broke out between the United States and Israel. The route typically transports approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil, making it an essential gateway for global energy supplies.
Tehran has insisted that ships acquire permission before crossing the strait. The United States has responded to Iran’s embargo by establishing a naval counter-blockade on its oil exports.
The most recent tanker fire was recorded against the backdrop of restrictions and competing maritime procedures. However, the public statement did not provide independent confirmation of the mine strike or any more information on the vessel.
Strait of Hormuz Oil Tanker Incident Raises Tensions
The maritime events coincide with an exchange of warnings between US President Donald Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi about the possibility of further military action.
Trump stated that Washington would soon end its assault against Iran unless Tehran altered direction swiftly. He accused Iran of threatening Israel and the United States for decades and said that its military and financial capabilities had been severely degraded.
In speeches to the Israeli people, Trump mentioned the words “Death to Israel” and “Death to America”. He cautioned that Iran could finally carry out the threats he attributed to Tehran.
Trump has actively supported Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of his re-election campaign. He advised Israeli citizens not to vote for a new leader, claiming that the US would otherwise be forced to handle the problem on its own.
In response, Araghchi warned against the possibility of further war and stated that Iran will not be intimidated by threats of additional military action.
The tanker fire and contradictory assertions highlight the tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. For the time being, the Guards’ account indicates that Iran reported a mine strike and an engine room fire, but no other information on the vessel or the incident is known.
