Elon Musk Says Starlink Could Give Indian Users More Internet Choices

Elon Musk Faces Backlash Over Starlink Restrictions in Ukraine

Elon Musk renewed his efforts to introduce Starlink’s satellite internet services to India, claiming that increased competition would provide consumers with more options. The SpaceX CEO also chastised those protecting the country’s existing internet industry, claiming that his company would need to provide low costs to entice Indian clients.

Musk disputed claims that Starlink couldn’t compete with low-cost services already available in India in a post on X on Saturday. He also questioned predictions that the satellite internet service may become a formidable competitor to established firms.

Musk claimed that competition might diminish existing operators’ earnings without putting them out of business. He stated that having more options for Indian consumers would be beneficial.

He also admitted that if Starlink’s services were prohibitively expensive, it would struggle to attract clients. As a result, the corporation would have to provide costs that Indian customers could pay, he said.

Elon Musk Pushes Starlink India Entry Amid Market Debate

Musk’s comments were in response to a post by Aaron Burnett, CEO of Mach33 Financial Group, who questioned if India’s internet services were as inexpensive and effective as widely touted.

Burnett contended that cheap rates were mostly related to mobile internet, which dominates the Indian market. He quoted a monthly mobile data usage of 30-40 GB in India, compared to home fibre connections that can handle nearly 300 GB per month.

He stated that this distinction suggested that fixed broadband services could attract more subscribers if cheaper alternatives become available. Burnett also stated that fixed internet penetration, which was estimated in his essay to be less than 5%, might increase dramatically if costs plummeted.

Musk’s current statements follow a previous insulting message directed at a prominent Indian business player. In that post, he claimed that Starlink should be allowed to compete and that satellite communication may benefit those living in locations without internet access.

He also mentioned the potential benefits for children in need of online educational tools and small enterprises looking to expand into new areas. Musk also stated that satellite services had assisted to sustain communication during natural disasters when other systems failed.

Starlink’s projected Indian launch is still subject to regulatory approvals, including security checks and service price determinations.

Starlink India Licence Decision Nears, Says Scindia

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated on Friday that India will not allow a monopoly in the satellite communications business. He mentioned Reliance Jio, OneWeb, and Starlink as the three companies with licenses, while Amazon was also interested in entering the sector.

Scindia stated that authorities were nearing a resolution on the price framework for satellite communication services. The Department of Telecommunications and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India have been discussing the matter.

He noted that permitted businesses must separately complete security requirements and other milestones before beginning commercial operations. Obtaining a licence does not imply that a company can instantly begin offering services.

The government has also denied Musk’s prior claim that significant economic interests were preventing Starlink’s admission. The Communications Ministry stated that the three licensed operators were in basically similar phases of the regulatory process, with security inspections underway.

According to the ministry, each corporation can proceed with spectrum assignment once the relevant formalities have been completed.

The next step for Starlink in India will be to complete regulatory procedures and make price decisions. While Musk claims that competition would benefit customers, commercial services cannot commence until all necessary permissions and security measures are completed.
