US Avocado Operations to Partially Resume in Mexico’s Main Avocado Region

US Avocado Operations :The United States will partially restart official activity in Michoacan, Mexico’s largest avocado-producing state, following a temporary ban that prompted worries about the safety of US troops. The ruling is likely to bring relief to the avocado export industry, but Washington has yet to declare when full operations will resume.

According to the US Embassy, government activity in Michoacan’s primary avocado-producing region will resume on Saturday. Mexican authorities implemented additional security measures and told US diplomats that inspectors and other workers would be better protected.

The embassy noted that it would continue to assess security conditions and may adapt its operations if the situation changes. However, officials could not specify a date for the complete restoration of activities.

US Avocado Operations Resume in Selected Michoacan Areas

The temporary embargo began on Wednesday, when US officials identified a security danger to American interests in Michoacan. As a result, checks for avocado exports to the United States were temporarily suspended.

These inspections are critical because Michoacan is Mexico’s biggest avocado producer and a major supplier to the United States market. A protracted disruption might have harmed producers, exporters, packing facilities, and enterprises that rely on the cross-border avocado trade.

The partial reopening permits inspections to resume in certain regions while relieving immediate pressure on the industry. The Mexican Hass Avocado Association had previously stated that the temporary halt was unlikely to result in a substantial avocado scarcity in the United States because current inventories and shipments in transit were expected to keep supplies stable.

Security Concerns Continue to Affect US Avocado Operations

According to Michoacan officials, the security worries stemmed from the violence that occurred following the arrest of accused cartel leader Alfonso Fernandez Magallon. Authorities also cited unconfirmed claims that a US Department of Agriculture inspector had received a threat.

In response, Mexico beefed up security surrounding the avocado sector. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexican authorities were working closely with the US Embassy to assure inspectors’ safety. The security operation involved around 1,500 soldiers and National Guard personnel deployed throughout Michoacan.

US Avocado Operations Still Face Uncertainty

The partial resumption demonstrates how critical security circumstances are to the avocado trade between Mexico and the United States. Although inspections are returning in some locations, the decision by the US Embassy to continue assessing conditions indicates that concerns have not been fully addressed.

This is not the first time that security concerns have hampered avocado inspections in Michoacan. Similar interim suspensions happened in 2022 and 2024 following events involving US inspectors.

For producers and exporters, the reopening is a welcome move because it allows a portion of the typical export process to resume. However, in the absence of a full resumption schedule, firms must continue to constantly monitor developments.

Michoacan remains the epicenter of Mexico’s valuable avocado business, but organized crime and recurrent violence continue to endanger workers and supply chain officials. The immediate impact for US consumers is expected to be limited since avocados in storage and transportation can assist supply current demand.

For the time being, the partial restoration of avocado operations in the United States provides some stability to the business. The full revival of activities in Michoacan will depend on Mexican authorities’ ability to maintain security and persuade US officials that inspectors can safely operate throughout the state’s avocado-producing region.
