A “special session of the IAEA Board of Governors on matters related to military strikes of the United States and Israel against the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran” will be held at Russia’s request, the Vienna-based institution stated late on Saturday.
The conference takes place in the midst of escalating tensions in the Middle East following the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior military officials in US and Israeli airstrikes on Saturday. Tehran then launched missile attacks on Israel and Gulf states, heightening worries of a wider regional conflict.
US President Donald Trump warned Iran against further escalation, while Iranian leaders threatened reprisal, heightening concerns about a wider regional conflict.
Earlier on Saturday, the IAEA stated that it had found no “radiological impact” from US and Israeli strikes on Iran or counterattacks in other nations in the region. However, it did not say whether Iranian nuclear facilities were directly targeted.

The 35 member states that make up the IAEA Board of Governors are in charge of the organization’s operations and have the authority to call special meetings to discuss pressing issues pertaining to nuclear safety and safeguards.
According to a classified report obtained by AFP, the U.N. nuclear watchdog also emphasised on Friday, February 27, the “utmost urgency” of its request to verify all nuclear material in Iran.
The Islamic state is accused of attempting to get nuclear weapons by Western nations, including the United States and Israel, Iran’s fiercest adversary.
Tehran maintains that it has the right to use this technology for civilian purposes even though it denies having such military aspirations.
