Dubai Attack : Why Iran Strikes Arab Countries

The United States and Israel launched a huge assault against Iran on Saturday, and Tehran announced hours later that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had died. In announcing the attack, US President Donald Trump urged Iranians to grasp the opportunity and “take over”.

Iran counterattacked by firing drones and missiles against Israel, as well as raids on US military installations in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. The firefights persisted well early Sunday.

Explosions were heard for the second day on Sunday in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates; Bahrain’s capital, Manama; and Qatar’s capital, Doha, heightening concerns about a long-term confrontation.

Iran has attacked Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, which has been closed for operations since hostilities began. It had already struck the Palm, Dubai’s famous land island, as well as the Burj Al Arab, a luxury hotel.

The US-Israeli strikes came two days after the most recent US-Iran negotiations, as Trump pressed Tehran for a compromise to limit its nuclear program while building up a fleet of warships in the region. Iran’s theocracy has also faced growing opposition as a result of widespread protests that began over the economics but later became anti-government.

Israel claimed it collaborated with the US for months to organise the assaults. The US military claimed its targets in Iran included Revolutionary Guard command centers, air defence capabilities, missile and drone launch locations, and military airfields.
