President Donald Trump has informed his supporters that they may vote by mail in the upcoming US congressional midterm elections, although he still prefers to vote in person. The remarks indicate an important departure from his earlier criticism of mail-in voting.

Trump made the statements on Monday, before departing the White House for a rally in Nebraska. He believes voters should be able to select how they cast their ballots in the November 3 midterm elections.

His comments came after he aired a campaign video over the weekend encouraging Republicans to vote early, mail-in ballots, or in person on Election Day.

Trump Urges Supporters to Vote by Mail or In Person

Trump said his supporters could vote by mail if they wanted, but he acknowledged that many voters prefer to cast their votes in person.

The shift in tone comes after years of Trump doubting the security of mail-in voting. He has often claimed that his failure in the 2020 presidential election was due to fraud, including reported issues with mail-in ballots.

Trump did not explain why he is suddenly encouraging people to vote via mail. At the same time, he made it obvious that he still preferred in-person voting.

The Trump administration had previously sought tighter rules for mail-in voting before the midterm elections. However, the Supreme Court declined in September to allow the Postal Service to put the new rules into effect.

Trump Urges Supporters to Vote as Republicans Face Tough Race

Some Republicans have previously warned that limiting mail-in voting may reduce turnout among conservative voters in rural communities. Some of these voters live a long distance from polling centers, making mail-in voting a potentially crucial option.

Trump’s recent remarks come as Republicans enter the final weeks of the campaign in a tough political environment. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Monday, Trump’s approval rating remains at 32%, unchanged from its record low in September.

According to the same poll, registered voters favoured Democrats over Republicans when asked which party they planned to support in the midterm elections. Democrats led Republicans 44% to 37%.

The difference was even greater among independent voters. Democrats got 37% support, compared to 21% for Republicans, with 28% unsure.

Trump’s decision to openly embrace mail voting gives his followers an additional choice as the November 3 election approaches. His comments also come in the context of his long-standing criticism of the voting process.

For Republicans, the issue is especially important as the party seeks high turnout during the campaign’s final stages.
