Trump EU tariffs: Trump Warns Europe of Heavy Tariffs Over Canada Proposal

Trump EU tariffs tensions could rise further after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Europe could face heavy tariffs if the European Union moves ahead with a proposal to make Canada the bloc’s first associate member.

Speaking to reporters on his way to an event in North Carolina, Trump said he was prepared to take harsh measures if he saw the EU’s stance as unfriendly. He said that this may involve imposing significant tariffs or suspending trade with Europe in numerous sectors.

Trump said that the answer will be determined by the intentions behind the plan. If the change was undertaken with good intentions, he said there would be no problem. However, if he judged it a hostile move, he warned that Europe may face very high tariffs.

Trump EU tariffs warning follows EU-Canada proposal

The warning came after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested greater connections with Canada in her annual State of the Union address on Wednesday.

Mark Carney, the Canadian Prime Minister, attended the address. Von der Leyen said that the initiative intended to build relationships between friends in an openly hostile environment.

The EU is grappling with the ongoing border conflict caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Canada and the EU have also experienced economic issues with the United States, while China has been more aggressive in international affairs.

The plan would establish Canada as the EU’s first associate member. However, the concept has already generated concerns inside the group, since the EU has generally been wary of alliances without a proper legal basis.

One EU ambassador expressed astonishment at the suggestion and questioned the new arrangement’s meaning. The ambassador also expressed worry that the European Commission president may be offering more than the EU can eventually deliver.

Canada seeks closer ties with Europe

Carney said earlier this month that he intended to form a “unique alliance” with the European Union. His remarks come as ties between Ottawa and Washington deteriorated since Trump’s return to the White House.

The conflict between Canada and the United States has already led in tariffs impacting tens of billions of dollars in cross-border commerce. The current EU plan may contribute to the larger trade tensions between Canada, Europe, and the United States.

Carney is expected to speak to the European Parliament on Thursday morning. His arrival coincides with the EU’s consideration of the planned connection with Canada, and Trump has warned that Washington may retaliate with more trade restrictions.

For the time being, Trump’s words leave the door open for more Trump-EU tariffs if the US regards the EU’s planned agreement with Canada as unfriendly.
