This year’s workout began just one day after President Donald Trump made a huge statement.

On August 16, Trump directed the Pentagon to dramatically cut joint military exercises with South Korea. He cited the drills’ cost, South Korea’s stance on US-led operations involving Iran, and his connection with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Despite Trump’s directive, the Ulchi Freedom Shield drill commenced as planned on August 17. The recent revelation has sparked concerns about how the United States military’s participation in future drills with South Korea may alter.
