South Korea Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il Nominated in Major Cabinet Reshuffle

The South Korea Finance Minister post is set to go to Vice Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il as President Lee Jae Myung announced a major Cabinet reshuffle on Sunday. The president nominated Lee Hyoung-il for the position along with five other candidates for ministerial posts.

At a press event, presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik revealed the adjustments. Finance, defense, justice, land policy, gender equality, and support for small and medium-sized businesses are among the issues addressed in the reshuffle.

South Korea Finance Minister Nominee Named

Lee Hyoung-il, who now serves as vise finance minister, has been appointed to lead the Finance Ministry. His nomination is part of a larger shakeup in President Lee’s Cabinet.

The announcement also includes a new nomination for Defense Minister. Kang Shin-chul, a former deputy commander of the South Korea-USA Combined Forces Command, was chosen for the position.

Kang has served in prominent positions inside South Korea’s and the United States’ joint military command structures. His nomination would put a former senior military officer in charge of the country’s defense ministry.

Five Other Ministerial Nominees

Several other ministries will see changes as a result of the restructuring. Vise Land Minister Hong Jee-sun was proposed as the new land minister, succeeding her existing position at the ministry.

Kim Seung-won, a congressman from the ruling party, has been named the contender for justice minister. His nomination is another critical component of the president’s Cabinet reforms.

Yong Hye-in, a minor party politician, has been appointed the new gender equality minister. She is one of the lawmakers appointed by President Lee as part of the reshuffle.

Lee So-young, a legislator from the ruling party, has been named minister for small and medium-sized businesses. The post oversees government policies and assistance for small and medium-sized businesses.

Six Cabinet Changes Announced

The six selections mark a significant overhaul of President Lee’s cabinet. The appointments come from government ministries, the ruling party, a small party, and the military.

If Lee Hyoung-il’s nomination is approved, he will lead the Finance Ministry. His promotion from vise finance minister to minister would place the ministry in the hands of an experienced government finance official.

Meanwhile, Kang Shin-chul, who formerly served as deputy commander of the South Korea-United States Combined Forces Command, will lead the defense ministry.

President Lee’s most recent nominees have implications for some of the government’s most critical policy areas. The news offers the president’s Cabinet a new look in the economic, defense, legal, land, gender equality, and small-business sectors.
