Pakistan Politics Tension : A new political scandal arose in Pakistan when a leaked diplomatic cable rekindled charges that the US pressed Pakistani politicians to oust former Prime Minister Imran Khan from office in 2022. The US government has now replied by stating that Pakistan’s political future should be decided entirely by its own people.
The topic was brought back to public attention after investigative reports revealed contents of a confidential diplomatic message known as “Cable I-0678.” The letter purportedly reveals a meeting between Pakistani ambassador Asad Majeed and senior US official Donald Lu prior to Khan’s ouster by the no-confidence vote. According to accounts, the cable indicated that if Khan was removed from government, relations with Washington would improve.
For years, Imran Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, have claimed that foreign forces and local political competitors conspired to remove him due to his independent foreign policy. Khan has underlined his upcoming travel to Russia in early 2022, as well as his criticism of Western pressure on the Ukraine war. The United States has frequently denied any involvement in Pakistani internal politics.
Pakistan Political Leak Creates Fresh Pressure on Government
The recent leak has heightened political tensions in Pakistan, which is already confronting economic and security issues. Imran Khan supporters claim the paper backs up their long-held allegations that external influence played a role in Khan’s government’s demise.
However, the Pakistani military establishment and past leaders have previously denied conspiracy allegations. Previous meetings of Pakistan’s National Security Committee recognized that the language used by foreign officials was “undiplomatic,” but officials later said that there was no evidence of a clear international conspiracy.
Political observers believe the revival of the issue will exacerbate tensions between the current government, the military establishment, and Khan’s supporters. The controversy has also reignited debates about Pakistan’s foreign policy orientation and ties with the United States.
US Response on Pakistan Politics Tries to Calm Diplomatic Row
After international media inquired, a US State Department spokeswoman stated that Pakistan’s political affairs are for “the Pakistani people to decide.” The representative declined to comment directly on the WikiLeaks cable or the words attributed to Donald Lu.
The cautious approach demonstrates Washington’s desire to avoid another diplomatic crisis with Islamabad. Since Khan’s dismissal in April 2022, relations between the two countries have remained tense.
Meanwhile, the scandal is expected to remain a big issue in Pakistani politics as Khan’s party prepares for future political actions and public campaigning. Several opposition voices are calling for greater transparency in diplomatic communications, while government supporters accuse Khan’s team of exploiting the leak for political gain.
The current developments may not immediately affect Pakistan-US relations, but they have once again brought Pakistan’s political problems to international notice.
