María Corina Machado Returns to Venezuela : Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has returned to her home country after months in exile. US President Donald Trump expressed optimism for her safety upon her arrival. Her homecoming coincides with a moment of political transition in the country, following the detention of former President Nicolás Maduro by US forces in January.
Machado verified her presence in Venezuela with a post on X, stating, “I’m here. “I am with you.” Her close political friend, Edmundo González, who is still in exile, also announced her arrival in the nation.
González regarded the incident as a watershed moment for Venezuelans, claiming Machado had returned to oversee the political process. He also stated that he intended to return to Venezuela in the future.
The circumstances underlying Machado’s return were not immediately apparent. Videos and photos circulating online purported to show her at Barquisimeto, the capital of Lara state, around 220 miles west of Caracas. Images showed her surrounded by fans at the Sanctuary of the Divine Shepherdess church.
María Corina Machado Returns as Venezuela Faces Political Change
Machado departed Venezuela in December last year to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Her homecoming comes after months away from the nation, during which she reportedly attempted more than six fruitless attempts to return, including following a huge earthquake off Venezuela’s northern coast in June.
Her political future has sparked speculation since Maduro was detained by US soldiers in January. Machado’s organization is largely thought to have won the 2024 presidential election, despite Maduro’s refusal to cede power.
Following Maduro’s ouster, speculation mounted that Trump would back Machado in taking over the country. Instead, his administration supported Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s former vise president, who is currently running the country’s interim government.
Machado and Rodríguez are long-time political opponents. The Trump administration feared Machado’s return to Venezuela would strain relations with Rodríguez.
Despite their political disagreements, Machado has frequently lauded Trump for the operation that ousted Maduro. She also personally handed him her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal.
María Corina Machado Return Draws Trump and Rubio Responses
When reporters questioned about Machado’s homecoming on Sunday, Trump said. He stated he had no idea about her coming but regarded her as a really pleasant woman.
“I hope she’s safe,” Trump continued, noting that the US was doing well in Venezuela. His words did not specify if his government was aware of Machado’s plans.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio took a different approach, tying her return to reconciliation efforts sponsored by Washington. He claimed that the discussions had already resulted in the release of hundreds of political prisoners and the return of hundreds of opposition activists from exile.
Rubio regarded Machado’s comeback as the direct outcome of those efforts. His statements framed the development as part of a larger process involving political prisoners and Venezuelans residing outside the nation.
Machado’s entrance marks the return of a key opposition figure to Venezuela during a period of political change. However, the facts of her return, next measures, and impact on relations with Rodríguez are unknown based on current evidence.
