Iran Strait of Hormuz Talks: Araghchi Meets Trump Envoy Witkoff in New York

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in New York on Tuesday as Washington and Tehran explored a possible path toward ending the ongoing conflict. The Iran Strait of Hormuz issue was among the key subjects discussed, with Tehran reportedly setting out conditions for reopening the important shipping route.

The meeting was held behind closed doors on the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly. On the American side, Jared Kushner, the son-in-law and adviser to US President Donald Trump, attended the meeting.

Washington had sought the meeting, according to Iranian officials. Tehran made many demands, including the immediate withdrawal of the US naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and an end to the fight on what it termed as resistance fronts.

Iran Strait of Hormuz Reopening Linked to US Actions

The Strait of Hormuz has remained a major source of contention throughout the conflict due to its role in global oil shipping. Iranian authorities have said that if the US reduces military and economic pressure, Tehran may reopen the waterway.

A senior Iranian official claimed Iran might reopen the waterway within a week if Washington reciprocates. The alleged conditions discussed in New York have so placed the canal at the center of the most recent diplomatic efforts.

Witkoff later stated that during the UN gathering, negotiations with Iranian representatives were held through mediators. He stated that the two sides had finished a round of negotiations and that Washington anticipated the discussions would lead to a positive resolution.

Regional countries, especially Qatar, assisted to ease contact between the two parties. The talks provided a rare opportunity for direct interaction following months of delayed negotiations and ongoing warfare.

Why Araghchi Is in New York

Araghchi flew to New York to join Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other members of Iran’s delegation for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

This is Araghchi’s first visit to the United States since the start of the US-Iran war. Despite the ongoing conflict, Washington approved visas for senior Iranian officials to attend the UN summit.

The Iranian delegation is subject to travel restrictions within the United States. Their permissible venues are mostly restricted to the UN headquarters, Iran’s UN mission, the ambassador’s residence, and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

As a result, the UN assembly has created an unusual environment for US and Iranian officials to talk while the conflict is ongoing.

Trump Signals More Talks After Meeting

The New York conference came just after Trump addressed the United Nations and warned that the US had to choose between achieving an agreement with Iran and taking further measures.

Trump also expressed hope that a deal with Iran will be feasible in the future. Later, his comments on the meeting with Iranian delegates were more encouraging.

He praised the session as “very good” and “very productive,” and suggested that further discussions could take place soon.

Washington and Tehran have not reached a final agreement at their most recent talks. However, the conversations have opened up a new route for negotiations, with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s other demands becoming part of the diplomatic talks.
