The event was arranged by the Consulate in association with the Indian People Forum (IPF) UAE. It was conducted as part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25-year public service anniversary celebration.

Indian Expats Honour Captain Smit Machchhar
On September 30, Captain Smit was operating a flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv when he sustained serious injuries in the cockpit. The flight carried 174 passengers and crew.
According to authorities, the co-pilot attacked Captain Smit with a crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft. According to the UAE Attorney General, the event was an attempted terrorist act.
Despite terrible injuries, Captain Smit was able to open the cockpit door during his final attempt to respond to the situation. This allowed crew members and passengers to access the cockpit, therefore preventing a tragedy.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 landed successfully in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Captain Smit got basic medical attention there before being moved to Abu Dhabi.
The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi stated on Tuesday that the pilot was making steady progress and regaining his health. The inquiry into the event is still underway.
