A homecoming party in Vienna, Georgia, turned tragic early Sunday when gunfire spilt across an area of roughly four blocks, killing two individuals and injuring almost three dozen more. Hours after the incident, authorities were still investigating, with no arrests or motives reported.
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy identified the two victims as 21-year-old Jaquevion Jackson of Cordele and 23-year-old Macaleb Jackson of Hawkinsville.
According to Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls, both individuals died at the scene as a result of gunshot wounds. He characterised the incident as “horrific” and stated that numerous other persons had been shot.
Peavy reported that the injured individuals ranged in age from 14 to 51 years old. They were sent to several hospitals in the area, with some said to be in serious condition and others stable.
Georgia Homecoming Party Shooting Drew More Than 1,000 People
When the shooting took place, there were around 1,000 individuals present. According to Peavy, more than 50 rounds were fired in at least two sites about a block apart.
When the first gunfire rang out, deputies were already nearby. According to Peavy, further shots were fired after authorities arrived on the scene, making it impossible to tell what was going on among the enormous throng.
The celebration was held during Dooly County High School’s homecoming weekend. However, school administrators stated that the event was not supported by the school.
Sherrod Willaford, superintendent of the Dooly County School System, stated that the incident may have an impact on students, families, and staff. Schools were set to open on Monday with enhanced safety precautions in place, though he did not disclose specifics.
The celebrations began Friday nite after a homecoming football game. Peavy stated that the evening proceeded calmly while deputies patrolled the event, but Saturday night’s gathering proved considerably more difficult for officials to handle.
Ashley Gee, 30, who had travelled to Vienna from adjacent Turner County, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that she heard rapid shooting before people fled.
According to Coroner Walls, some people were hit by gunfire, and perhaps a dozen others were hurt while attempting to flee.
Georgia Homecoming Party Shooting Remains Under Investigation
By Sunday evening, authorities had not made any arrests or determined a motive for the violence. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, several of the injured had gunshot wounds, but the exact number was unknown at the time.
GBI spokesperson Chris Hosey stated that detectives were still working to determine what transpired. Another GBI official, Lydia Bullard, declined to comment because the inquiry was still ongoing.
Vienna Mayor Eddie Daniels stated that the incident occurred roughly a block from his home. He reported seeing multiple police vehicles but had not yet communicated with law authorities about the incident.
Daniels also stated that the city had not issued a permit for the block party and that he was unsure whether it was formally related to the homecoming celebrations.
Vienna is a small rural hamlet located around 130 miles south of Atlanta. It is also approximately 50 miles south of Macon, where authorities said that 12 teens were injured by gunshots after a dispute at a birthday celebration in a city park the previous weekend.
Investigators in Vienna are still working to determine how the massive gathering escalated into a deadly shooting and who was responsible. Authorities had not revealed the motivation or confirmed whether any suspects were in custody.
The attack killed two people, injured over three dozen others, and left the neighbourhood reeling from a horrific nite during homecoming weekend.
