Canada Unifor GM Agreements : Unifor, a Canadian organization, has negotiated tentative deals with General Motors to cover workers at several major operations in Ontario. The agreements affect approximately 4,600 employees and must be approved by union members before becoming final.
Unifor announced the agreements on Saturday, August 22, 2026, after negotiating with General Motors. The proposed agreements affect employees at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, the CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll, and work sites in St. Catharines and Woodstock.
The development is a crucial step in Unifor and GM’s negotiations as the union pursues higher compensation and benefits for Canadian auto workers.
Canada Unifor GM Agreements Include Income and Benefit Gains
Lana Payne, Unifor National President, stated that the tentative agreements would result in significant increases in wages and benefits for members.
The union’s announcement did not include any specifics about the proposed agreements. Workers will consequently need to review the agreements before participating in the next ratification meetings.
Talks between Unifor and General Motors began earlier this month. The negotiations took place after Unifor and Ford’s separate deal was ratified.
The Ford contract included 3% wage increases in each of the three years. That agreement served as a crucial foundation for Unifor’s discussions with GM, however the union has not stated that the GM agreements include the same wage increases.
GM Workers to Vote on Unifor Agreements
The Canada Unifor GM agreements are still tentative and not yet final contracts. According to Unifor, ratification sessions will be held on August 29 and 30.
During those meetings, members will have the opportunity to review the proposed agreements and vote on whether or not to approve. The outcome of the voting will determine if the tentative agreements are formally ratified.
For GM employees in Ontario, the next ratification process will be an essential next step. Until members vote, the proposed agreements are still subject to approval.
