Australia Social Media Curbs Called ‘World-Leading’ by Tim Cook

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Apple Executive Chair Tim Cook described Australia social media curbs as “world-leading” during their meeting at Apple’s headquarters in California on Sunday. Albanese said Cook also backed efforts to improve online safety.

Albanese mentioned the meeting from Apple Park in remarks televised in Australia. He claimed Cook spent a significant amount of time with him and highlighted the efforts Australia had implemented to make social media safer.

Australia Social Media Curbs Focus on Online Safety

Australia has continued to enhance its social media and online safety regulations. Earlier this month, the government announced intentions to offer social media users more control over the content that appears in their feed.

In December, the country prohibited youngsters under the age of 16 from using social media. Australia became the first country to enact such a limitation.

According to Albanese, Cook viewed Australia’s progress on social media regulation positively. He added the Apple executive thought the country’s strategy was in the forefront of efforts to promote online safety.

Apple also referenced Cook’s remarks about the meeting. In a post on X, Cook expressed gratitude for the opportunity to show Albanese some of Apple’s latest inventions.

The tools provided settings that allowed parents and children to govern their online experiences. Cook described them as powerful and user-friendly features designed to keep youngsters safe online.
