Agniveers Service Extension : The government is contemplating making significant changes to the Agnipath recruiting system, which might allow all Agniveers to join the regular Armed Forces. Under the idea, the first 25% would enter regular duty after four years, while the remaining 75% may serve a further two years before being absorbed.
The Ministry of Defence is also evaluating marriage-related restrictions during the proposed extended period. Agniveers are now unable to marry while serving their original four-year sentence. However, the government is looking at family issues and may propose easing this limit for individuals who receive the extra two years.
The planned revisions come following the government’s decision to extend the Agniveer service duration from four to six years. Those who are not selected for regular enrolment after their first four years of study will be given an additional two years under the redesigned system.
Agniveers Service Extension May Open a Path to Regular Jobs
Under the previous system, only 25% of Agniveers could be chosen for permanent service based on merit. The remaining 75% had to quit the Armed Forces after finishing their four-year term.
The updated framework alters the service time for individuals who were not chosen in the first round. They will now be granted a further two years, bringing their total tenure to six.
After completing this prolonged time, Agniveers who choose to remain in the Armed Forces may be considered for regular enlistment. However, their selection will be based on objective criteria. This implies that not all candidates will receive an automatic decision.
Separately, sources claimed the Defence Ministry is contemplating plans to eventually absorb all Agniveers. Under this concept, the first 25% would join the regular troops after four years. The remaining 75 percent would serve a further two years before being incorporated into their respective Army, Navy, or Air Force.
The suggestion is currently being considered. As a result, the proposal for 100% absorption should not be regarded as a verified final policy.
General NS Raja Subramani, Chief of Defence Staff, announced the two-year service extension during a Cabinet briefing on Wednesday. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, endorsed the decision.
The news came only weeks before about 18,000 Agniveers were scheduled to complete their four-year service and depart the Armed Forces.
Agniveers Service Extension May Also Change Marriage Rules
Marriage limitations are another problem being considered under the proposed agreement. Current laws prohibit Agniveers from marrying during their first four years of service.
However, the Defence Ministry is looking into family-related issues of the lengthier tenure. This includes the prospect of modifying marriage regulations for staff granted a two-year extension. The information supplied does not indicate a final decision on this modification.
The Government of India announced the Agnipath initiative in 2022 to reform the Armed Forces recruiting procedure. It includes services such as the Indian Navy, where young individuals who have completed Class 10 or Class 12 can become Agniveers.
Navy trainees begin basic training at INS Chilka in Odisha. They then take professional courses at several Navy training institutions around the country.
After training, Agniveers are sent to floating platforms to get sea experience. They may later be given responsibilities aboard ships, in air squadrons, or at shore sites. Their training is intended to develop the abilities required for their given tasks, whether completed under supervision or autonomously.
The revised six-year term allows Agniveers who were not chosen in the first round to serve an additional amount of time. Meanwhile, the government is proposing broad revisions to regular enrollment and marriage regulations. The specific details of the proposed full-absorption plan, including any changes to marriage prohibitions, have yet to be finalized.
