In an update to X, NCS stated, “EQ of M: 3.3, On: 27/02/2026 02:05:02 IST, Lat: 27.15 N, Long: 85.16 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Nepal.”
Shallow earthquakes are often more damaging than profound ones. This is because seismic waves from shallow earthquakes travel a shorter distance to the surface, causing stronger ground shaking, potentially more structural damage, and more casualties.
Earthquakes can occur anywhere between the Earth’s surface and 700 km below it. According to USGS data, the earthquake depth range of 0 – 700 km is classified into three zones: shallow, moderate, and deep.

Shallow earthquakes are those that are less than 70 kilometres deep, intermediate earthquakes are those that are between 70 and 300 kilometres deep, and deep earthquakes are those that are 300 to 700 kilometres deep. The term “deep-focus earthquakes” refers to earthquakes that occur deeper than 70 km, according to the USGS.
How to save your life during an earthquake
To preserve your life during an earthquake, use the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” approach. If you’re inside, hide behind a sturdy table; if you’re outside, find an open field away from houses, trees and electricity lines. Do not hurry outdoors until the shaking stops, and never take a lift.
Key tips for earthquake safety:
Inside the home:
Crouch, hide, and hold on. Hide beneath sturdy tables or furniture.
Protect your head. If there isn’t a table, kneel in a corner and cover your head and neck with your arms.
Stay away from windows, glass, heavy shelves, and external walls.
Do not run outside: Running outside during a tremor can be hazardous.
Outside the home:
Stay outside: Choose an open space away from electricity poles, cables, towering buildings, and trees.
Sit down: To preserve equilibrium, sit on the ground until the shaking stops.
While driving (in a vehicle)
Stop: Keep your car away from bridges, overpasses, power wires, and buildings.
Stay in the car: Do not get out until the shaking has stopped.
