President Donald Trump threatened Canada on Thursday with a 50% duty on any aircraft delivered in the United States. This was the latest shot in his trade battle with the country’s northern neighbor, which is getting worse as his antagonism with Prime Minister Mark Carney grows.

Trump’s social media warning came after he vowed to levy a 100% tax on Canadian goods if a trade deal with China was reached. However, Trump’s statement did not include any specifics on when he would impose the import levies, as Canada had already reached an agreement.

In his latest warning, Trump stated that he was retaliating against Canada for refusing to approve jets from Savannah, Georgia-based Gulfstream Aerospace.

Bombardier spokespeople and Canada’s transportation minister did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Thursday evening.

Trump stated that in return, the United States would decertify all Canadian aircraft, including Bombardier. “If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50 per cent Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America,” Trump wrote on his Twitter account.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, on the other hand, stated last week that her government has temporarily halted oil shipments to Cuba, but that this was a “sovereign decision” made without US coercion. Trump has been pressuring Mexico to separate itself from the Cuban government.
