The Globe and Mail reported on Tuesday that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit India in the first week of March, citing Reuters.
According to the Globe and Mail, the Canadian Prime Minister’s visit will include the signing of agreements on uranium, energy, minerals, and artificial intelligence, according to Dinesh Patnaik, India’s High Commissioner to Canada, in an interview.
It was also reported that Canada’s Energy Minister Tim Hodgson is visiting India this week, and while PM Carney confirmed his visit, he did not provide any specific dates.
“There are plans for the Prime Minister to visit at some point this year, depending on our progress,” Hodgson said in a Sunday interview.
Carney Visit May Boost India-Canada Trade Talks
According to the Globe and Mail, Patnaik stated that formal negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with India should begin in March.
According to Patnaik, PM Carney is expected to sign minor agreements with India on nuclear energy, oil and gas, environment, AI and quantum computing, as well as deals on education and culture, during his visit, including a 10-year $2.8-billion uranium supply deal.
While Hodgson did not confirm the contract, he stated that Canada is willing to sell uranium under the Canada-India nuclear cooperation agreement as long as India follows International Energy Agency safeguards.

Earlier on Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a fruitful conversation with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand about boosting India-Canada bilateral relations. They talked about expanding cooperation in a variety of areas, including commercial partnerships, artificial intelligence, and high-level exchanges.
Carney Pushes Trade Diversification Strategy
These developments come after US President Donald Trump advised Canada against making trade accords with China. Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged Canadians to “Buy Canadian” in order to defend the country’s economy from global economic challenges, indicating a change toward a greater emphasis on local enterprise rather than reliance on foreign trade.
Carney’s message comes as transnational tensions rise, particularly in North American trade relations and Canada’s approach to Asia. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also claimed that Ottawa intends to double its non-US exports over the next decade in order to diversify its global trading landscape.
Carney and Modi Agree to Deepen Bilateral Cooperation
Carney accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to visit India in early 2026 on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa, according to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada.
Following the high commissioners’ return in August 2025, the two prime ministers agreed to enhance diplomatic staffing to satisfy rising consular demand and strengthen people-to-people ties. They also agreed to foster reciprocal knowledge transfer as part of continuous cooperation between the two countries.
Carney appreciated the progress made in India-Canada law enforcement dialogue.
Following a bilateral discussion on the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, agreed to begin negotiations on a high-ambition Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The scheduled CEPA discussions aim to increase bilateral commerce to $50 billion by 2030.
