According to authorities, Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national, shot and killed Brown students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov on December 13 before going to the home of renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno Loureiro and murdering him two days later.
No reason has been revealed for any of the murders, which have cast a lengthy shadow over two of New England’s generally polite premier colleges. It’s been suggested that he didn’t know the students.
According to the Portuguese media outlet Expresso, Valente, from Torres Novas in central Portugal, attended Lisbon’s IST institution at the same time as Loureiro.

They were classmates, and Valente was the best student of the year.
“Most classmates have no memory of the student Claudio Valente, except that he was the best in the class that year,” IST president Rogerio Colaco told the newspaper.
Loureiro, who taught nuclear science, engineering, and physics, on the other hand, maintained contacts with IST faculty, he said.
In the days following the assaults, investigators struggled to find viable leads, with President Donald Trump accusing Brown University of neglecting to connect its security cameras to police systems.
During the lengthy manhunt, scores of names emerged on social media and elsewhere in connection with the shooting, nearly all of which were bogus and unrelated to the massacre.
Rhode Island officials condemned the misinformation, claiming it hampered their investigation.
Reddit Tip-off
As the name of a military veteran who was initially detained and later released was reported in the media, social media became inundated with his photograph, as well as a flood of erroneous posts including photos of another individual with the same name.
Colonel Darnell Weaver, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, stated that “the endless barrage of misinformation, disinformation, rumors, leaks, and clickbait were not helpful in this investigation.”

The breakthrough for detectives, however, came from a tip from Reddit, an often murky, irreverent area of the internet.
Officers were alerted to a message on the social media forum site that instructed them to investigate a gray Nissan SUV.
Investigators then identified a tipster named “John” who told cops about an encounter with a strange figure at Brown prior to the slayings.
The information was critical to the inquiry, allowing officers to link the Brown campus shootings to the murder of an MIT professor.
In their briefing announcing the case’s end, officials revealed that Valente had gone to great lengths to conceal his identity, including using bogus license plates and a cell phone that detectives were unable to locate.
The search for the Brown gunman lasted six days until officers discovered Valente’s body in a self-storage facility in Salem, Massachusetts. He had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
However, questions remained about the episode.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha stated at the Thursday briefing, “In terms of why Brown?” “I think that’s a mystery.”
