Trump Greenland Venezuela Claims : US President Donald Trump stated during a Republican event in Perry, Georgia, on Saturday that the US has secured both Greenland and Venezuela. However, the agreements and political developments mentioned in the available evidence do not indicate that either territory has come under US control.
Speaking to supporters, Trump stated that Denmark had ceded Greenland to the United States. He referred to the claimed transaction as one of the largest real estate deals in history. He also asserted that the US had gained Venezuela, citing its oil reserves.
However, the facts reveal a different story. Greenland remains under Danish authority, while Venezuela stays independent. Neither territory has been officially handed to the United States.
Trump Greenland Venezuela Claims and the Denmark Deal
To back up his assertion about Greenland, Trump used a bilateral deal with Denmark. However, a memorandum of understanding signed on October 22 focuses on maritime sector collaboration and the improvement of US shipbuilding capabilities.
The document makes it clear that it does not encompass Greenland or the Faroe Islands. It further states that the agreement is not an international treaty and does not establish any legal rights or duties for any country.
The memorandum does not approve government purchases, contract awards, or money transfers between the two parties. Each country has its own price.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, hailed the arrangement as bringing Danish expertise to US maritime projects. According to a statement released on X by Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the partnership has the potential to produce commercial opportunities and jobs in both nations.
The agreement has three basic goals: training maritime professionals, exchanging equipment and technology, and boosting collaboration in defense-related companies. Commercial transactions will be handled independently.
A defence accord has also increased the US military’s rights in the region. It still recognises Danish sovereignty and Greenland’s right to self-determination.
Trump had previously discussed Greenland’s natural resources. On October 13, he announced that large-scale oil, gas, and mineral development was being planned for the island. He also stressed its significance to the security of the United States and Europe.
These proposals do not imply that Greenland has become American territory.
Trump Greenland Venezuela Claims Amid Political Changes
Trump’s remarks regarding Venezuela came following significant political and military events in the country.
Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were apprehended in January by US soldiers. They were arrested onboard a US naval warship and flown to New York for criminal proceedings.
International law specialists were concerned that the operation may have violated state sovereignty. Trump praised the move, claiming that the US had liberated Venezuela from a tyranny.
Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s Acting President, spoke at the UN General Assembly in September. She advocated for better relations with the United States and other countries.
Venezuela aims for respectful and equitable partnership, according to Rodríguez. She also discussed steering the country toward democratic elections and complete democracy on its own timeframe.
Her comments suggested a readiness to repair diplomatic ties with Washington. However, they did not proclaim any handover of Venezuelan sovereignty to the United States.
Greenland and Venezuela were mentioned as key US wins during Trump’s rally remarks. Nonetheless, the relevant agreements and declarations do not back up his assertion that America has purchased either territory. Both remain beyond the purview of US authority.
