Helen Haines, an Australian independent MP, has lost her right leg during emergency surgery after being hit by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The 65-year-old senator is in stable condition at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where doctors previously amputated her left leg.
Her husband, Phil Haines, revealed the second amputation Wednesday. He stated that the family had hoped surgeons could save her right leg, but were glad that she had survived the event and remained stable.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 19, outside Haines’ electorate office in Wangaratta, a small town in northeastern Victoria. According to police, a 43-year-old guy drove his vehicle into the MP while she was approaching her parked car.
Haines was initially sent to Wangaratta Hospital before being evacuated to Melbourne for emergency care. Surgeons severed her left leg shortly after her arrival and attempted to salvage the other. Her medical team later determined that the right leg would also have to be amputated.
Helen Haines Recovery Begins After Second Amputation
Speaking outside The Alfred Hospital, Phil Haines stated that his wife was alive and well, which was the most crucial news for their family. He also discussed her personality and the characteristics he believes would remain important as she recovers.
He regarded Haines as sympathetic and loving, with a bright brain. Although the family anticipates a difficult period ahead, he is confident in her ability to meet the challenges.
The MP’s injuries have resulted in a lengthy rehabilitation following many emergency treatments. Her husband has not implied that the path ahead will be easy, but his public comments have centred on her survival and the strength he feels she possesses.
Since 2019, Haines has served as an independent MP for the federal electorate of Indi in Victoria. She was a nurse and academic before becoming a member of parliament. Her political activity has centred on regional communities, government integrity, and public policy.
Helen Haines Case: Suspect Faces Multiple Charges
Brendan Nugent, 43, was detained at the scene by Victoria Police after being restrained by members of the public. The incident was allegedly targeted, according to police.
Nugent is charged with hazardous driving resulting in serious injury, wilfully inflicting serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. He appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates Court but did not seek for bail.
Investigators have not ruled out any new charges. Victoria Police and federal agencies are investigating the incident’s circumstances, although the claimed motive is still unknown.
The incident has been condemned by political figures across Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other officials have shown their support for Haines and her family.
The case has also brought greater focus to the safety of political officials. However, authorities have yet to determine the motivation, and the investigation is ongoing.
Haines is currently in stable condition as she begins her rehabilitation after losing both legs. The police investigation and legal hearings will determine the case’s next steps.
