Iran Houthi Cooperation : According to reports, Iran has offered intelligence and tactical support to Yemen’s Houthi movement as it launches strikes on Saudi Arabia and Yemeni government forces. The claimed support underlines the deepening operational linkages between Tehran and the Houthis as conflict continues in Yemen.
Danny Citrinowicz, a former Iran researcher with the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), regarded the partnership as operationally robust. He stated that the cooperation showed shared strategic goals rather than a simple arrangement in which one party works totally under the control of the other.
The revelation comes as tensions between the Houthis, Saudi Arabia, and the Yemeni government continue. Recent skirmishes, reports of missile attacks, and concerns over marine security have exacerbated the regional crisis.
Iran Houthi Cooperation Focuses on Intelligence and Strategy
According to Citrinowicz, Iran and the Houthi have tight operational links. His appraisal portrayed their relationship as one of collaboration between people with similar strategic goals, rather than a traditional client-patron dynamic.
The Houthis have also been battling against Yemen’s government-aligned forces. The two sides exchanged attacks in Taiz governorate, and forces loyal to the Yemeni government reported that 378 Houthi rebels were killed. The death toll was reported by government-aligned forces.
The Houthis’ control of the strategically crucial Bab al-Mandeb Strait has also been a factor in the larger conflict. The waterway is a crucial aspect of regional security, but the source report did not go into depth about how the suspected Iranian intelligence aid influenced activities there.
The allegations of Iranian support come as the Houthis continue to clash with opposing forces. The existing material, however, does not go into detail on the specific intelligence provided by Iran or the exact techniques utilised to transmit tactical guidance.
Iran Houthi Ties Draw Attention to Saudi and Yemen Security
Yemen’s government has accused the Houthis of hitting Aden International Airport with two rockets on Friday. According to Information Minister Moammar Al-Eryani, the missiles landed near a Yemenia Airlines plane that was about to depart for Egypt.
Al-Eryani identified the aircraft as Yemenia Airlines flight IY 612 from Aden International Airport to Cairo International Airport. He stated that the missiles landed about 500 meters from the aeroplane and 100 meters from the runway’s center.
The reported event prompted concerns about airport security. However, the data supplied did not show whether the missiles caused damage or casualties.
The broader scenario has also sparked speculation about probable collaboration between Saudi Arabia and Israel. When asked if Saudi Arabia had requested Israeli assistance, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yes. As published by The Times of Israel, he remarked that very few Middle Eastern regimes did not seek assistance from Israel.
Prior to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Saudi Arabia and Israel were thought to be nearing an agreement to normalise relations. US President Donald Trump has also pushed Saudi Arabia to accept Israel’s offer of help against the Houthi rebels, characterising it as “very helpful”.
The purported Iranian support, claims around Aden airport, and demands for regional collaboration all highlight the conflict’s security difficulties. According to the available information, Saudi Arabia has neither accepted Israel’s offer or committed to any specific support agreement.
