US President Donald Trump defended his announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on Monday, even though both parties denied that a deal had been reached. When reporters questioned the basis of his remark, Trump asserted that the countries agreed because he told them to.
The issue called into question the status of the agreed moratorium in attacks on energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Trump’s announcement unexpected, as Russian soldiers continued to target Ukrainian energy facilities.
Trump maintained that ending the war remained a priority and criticised Zelenskyy’s approach to negotiations. He also argued that Moscow was willing to reach an agreement, but Kyiv’s leadership was preventing progress.
Trump Faces Questions Over Ukraine-Russia Energy Ceasefire
During his press conference, Trump refused to answer questions regarding whether Russia and Ukraine had recognised the cease-fire. He emphasised that the agreement existed since he had stated that both parties had agreed.
Zelenskyy had previously stated that Trump’s declaration was “news to me,” implying that he had not been aware of such an agreement. Hours after Trump’s statement, Russia conducted an attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure as part of its ongoing onslaught.
The Ukrainian president also stated that there had been no indication that Russia was implementing the negotiated energy ceasefire. His words immediately contradicted the assumption that the two countries had already achieved an agreement.
The reported attacks occurred as confusion remained over whether either side had committed to halting strikes on energy installations. The available statements did not indicate that a mutually agreed-upon ceasefire was in force.
Trump, however, continued to argue that the conflict needed to end. He referred to figures showing that 32,000 people, mostly soldiers, had been killed during the month, and described the war as a disaster that had to be brought to a close.
Trump Says Putin Wants a Deal With Ukraine
In other comments, Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin was willing to negotiate an arrangement. He blamed Zelenskyy for the lack of progress, claiming that the Ukrainian leader had consistently refused to accept a settlement.
Trump said that the conflict could have been settled on multiple times but that Zelenskyy refused to reach an arrangement. His statements echoed his ongoing criticism of Ukraine’s leadership and his call for a diplomatic conclusion to the conflict.
The US president has also blamed Ukraine’s attacks on Russian energy infrastructure for the record-high fuel prices. He has called for Zelenskyy’s dismissal and campaigned for a new leader who would accept his demands in order to fast end the conflict.
The ceasefire debate takes place against the backdrop of ongoing differences over the terms of the conflict’s resolution. Zelenskyy has rejected Russian demands that he feels threaten Ukraine’s sovereignty.
According to the source report, Trump has regularly put pressure on Ukraine while voicing support for Moscow over the last 22 months. Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine cannot accept terms that would basically mean abandoning its independence.
For the time being, the status of the proposed energy truce remains unclear due to contradicting comments. Trump claims a deal has been struck, but Zelenskyy has questioned the news and revealed no proof of Russian compliance.
