Elon Musk has accused unnamed business groups of preventing Starlink from offering satellite internet services in India, alleging the move is intended to maintain their dominance over the telecom sector. The SpaceX CEO made the claim in a post on X, suggesting that Starlink might provide affordable, high-speed internet to people who do not currently have access or cannot pay existing services.
Musk stated that Starlink is being blocked in India, calling the situation a crime against the country’s people. He did not identify the companies or people he was referring to in his post.
He also denied reports that militants in Manipur had used Starlink technology. Musk explained that Starlink’s satellite beams are now turned off over India, making such use unfeasible.
Starlink India could expand connectivity in rural areas
The controversy comes as rural India continues to struggle with connection. According to a verified account affiliated with Musk and his enterprises, as of May 2026, 11,256 designated villages in India lacked 4G service. The figure was used to emphasise the possible need for increased telecom coverage in rural areas.
Starlink’s satellite-based solution might give internet access without requiring the same level of ground infrastructure as current broadband networks. Its satellites are in low Earth orbit, approximately 550 kilometres above Earth, as opposed to geostationary satellites, which are 36,000 kilometres apart.
Lower orbital distances can minimise internet latency. Users do not require huge networks of fibre cables or mobile towers in their immediate vicinity if they have a Starlink terminal.
This might make the technology helpful in remote areas where setting up traditional telecom infrastructure is difficult or expensive. Starlink has previously emphasised potential applications such as remote schooling, telemedicine, and disaster recovery.
Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX’s Vise President of Starlink Business Operations, previously stated that the business was willing to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s objective of reaching 100% connectivity throughout India. She suggested that Starlink may help connect remote classrooms and other underserved locations.
Starlink India pricing remains uncertain
While the corporation has explored its possible role in improving connectivity, the cost of Starlink services in India has not yet been determined.
In December 2025, Starlink’s website briefly featured an India subscription priced at Rs 8,600 a month, as well as a hardware kit priced at Rs 34,000. The business later stated that the displayed pricing were not final.
For the time being, the availability of Starlink services in India remains an important concern. Musk’s most recent comments highlight the company’s challenges, while the lack of verified price provides buyers with an incomplete picture of how much the service may cost.
Starlink’s potential role in linking locations with inadequate telecom coverage is dependent on whether the service can be formally launched across the country.
