China red lines have come into focus ahead of a planned meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump. China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, warned that issues including Taiwan, human rights and China’s development interests must not be challenged.
Xi is likely to visit to Washington for discussions with Trump as the two governments try to manage a strained relationship. Trade, Taiwan, and other issues have strained relations between the world’s two largest economies.
China red lines include Taiwan and human rights
In an article published by the People’s Daily, Xie stated that China and the United States must resolve their problems via mutual trust and good faith. He also accused Washington of exploiting national security, economic imbalances, and coerced labour as justifications for limiting China’s progress.
Xie stated that cooperation between the two countries can benefit both parties, however confrontation could result in losses for both. He advocated for direct communication between Beijing and Washington while their disputes remained.
China has designated four areas in which it deems red lines. These include the Taiwan issue, democracy and human rights, development pathways and systems, and development rights.
Beijing considers Taiwan to be a part of China, while Taipei authorities disagree. Although the United States has no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it remains the country’s primary supply of arms and a key international supporter.
According to Xie, high-level communication between Chinese and US leaders can assist maintain stable relations. He also suggested that neither country should avoid discussing sensitive topics during diplomatic talks.
Beijing calls for stability in China-US relations
Another opinion piece in the People’s Daily attacked Washington’s approach to China. It stated that persistent issues in bilateral relations were caused by what it defined as faulty US views of China and Washington’s continued emphasis on “strategic competition.”
The analysis was written under the pen name “Zhong Sheng,” which is commonly used for international affairs commentary. It urged both countries to maintain their relationship’s progress and resist outside interference.
The piece also asked Washington to be consistent in its policies and keep its promises. According to the article, greater consistency in US policies might increase predictability in bilateral relations.
The warnings come as Xi and Trump prepare for discussions at a time when Beijing and Washington remain deeply divided. Taiwan remains one of the two sides’ most sensitive problems, while trade and other disagreements continue to affect their relationship.
The upcoming conference is intended to provide an opportunity for both governments to directly address these issues. China’s most recent pronouncements make it apparent that it expects its stated positions on Taiwan, human rights, development, and sovereignty to be honoured during negotiations with Washington.
