Dubai gold prices moved higher on September 17 as global bullion prices initially gained after the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates. Gold prices climbed as much as 1.3 per cent to almost $4,320 an ounce before giving up part of those gains.
In the UAE, 24-karat gold was selling for Dh515.75 per gram, up from Dh512 at the previous closing. On Thursday, the price of 22-karat gold was Dh477.50 per gram.
Global gold prices eventually lost impetus and dipped below $4,300. At the time of publication, bullion was trading at $4,295 per ounce as markets responded to the Fed’s latest interest rate announcements.
Dubai Gold Prices Track Global Gold Movement
The early spike in gold occurred as investors reacted to the most recent Federal Reserve decision. On Wednesday, the US central bank boosted interest rates by 25 basis points in a unanimous vote.
The gains in gold, however, were short-lived. The Federal Reserve also sent a more hawkish signal than anticipated, as expectations about another rate hike sent bullion prices higher.
Gold does not pay interest, making it less appealing when bond rates are high. Following the Fed’s announcement, US Treasury rates rose to their highest level since 2024, before falling down. The decrease in yields offered some support to gold and helped to keep prices under control.
According to market expert Linh Tran of XS.com, gold may continue in a consolidation phase in the short future, with a small negative bias. According to Tran, a greater rebound would become more plausible if Treasury rates and the US currency began to fall, or if economic data reduced expectations for another rate hike.
Fed Rate Outlook Keeps Pressure on Gold
The Federal Reserve raised its median prediction for interest rates at the end of 2026 from 3.8% to 4.1%. The greater prediction meant that policymakers expected more rate rises.
During his post-decision briefing, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh again mentioned the continued danger of inflation. He said that prices in too many categories of products and services were still growing by more than 3% during both six-month and twelve-month periods.
The higher outlook for interest rates boosted the US dollar while adding pressure on gold. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index, which monitors the US dollar, rose 0.1% on Thursday after rising 0.5% on Wednesday.
Other precious metals also fell. Spot gold fell 1.14 percent on Thursday, while silver fell 1.3 percent to $63.73 per ounce.
For UAE customers, the current fluctuation indicates that local gold rates continue to track movements in global bullion prices. After an initial surge on Thursday, worldwide gold prices fell, leaving Dubai gold prices higher than the previous day’s close but lower than the day’s earlier peak.
